The Schenectady Naval Shipyard played an important role in the development of the United States Navy. In 1892, it was founded and became one of the first naval shipyards in America. Schenectady, New York (population: 318,000) is a city in the U.S. state of New York. The population was estimated to be 471,827 at the 2010 census and 516,567 as of 2017. The name "Schenectady" is derived from a Shawnee word meaning "place where deer run." The first settler in what is now Schenectady was David Rice in 1785. The town was named for General James Clinton's victory over the French at the Battle of Saratoga in 1777. On December 12, 1814, Genl John Prentice scoured the area for land to purchase from Chief Sachem removal proceedings were going on and he chose Schenectady as his choice because it had been abandoned by other settlers after an Indian raid two years earlier. In 1825 Schenectady became part of York County, New York following its merger with Albany County. In 1830 it gained city status when it ratified a charter granted by the State of New York governing dual municipal government with a mayor and five councilors; this gave it legal personality separate from Albany City proper which continued to have executive power until 1840 when that authority vested within Mayor George Washington Stephenson who also served on the Councilors’ Board In 1861 secession riots took place in Albany over differences between pro-Unionists and anti-Unionists On July 13th 1863 Union soldiers burned down buildings housing stores located near Fort Hamilton (later renamed Prospect Park) while they marched through town to Market Square

Schenectady, in the town of Schenectady, is one of the most prominent and historic towns in upstate New York. The population was 14,865 at the 2010 census and it is the home of Colgate University and Albany State University. It has a rich history dating back to 1795 when Schenectady was part of what was then Yorktown Heights. The first settlement on the present-day site of Schenectady was founded by Loyalist colonists who left England during the Revolutionary War. They built a log cabin near modern-day Park Street on Lake George in 1795. The original nucleus of this community became known as "the Gutters." In 1804, John D'Alma bought land from Samuel Williamson for $1,500. This tract included what is now downtown Schenectady and much of what is now north central Albany County. D'Alma began to plat out his land into farms that would provide food for his farmhands as well as generate revenue for him through customs fees levied on imported goods entering Albany County. D'Alma's purchase made Schenectady one of the oldest settlements in upstate New York and soon became an important seaport for trade with Canada and Philadelphia (then called Germantown). In 1814, he donated land to Colgate University which occupied much of today's Main Campus across from Capitol Square. That same year, D'Alma also donated money to create a public school system within Village Hall – becoming one of only a few donors in this way who still benefits from their generosity over time. During Reconstruction following the American Civil War, many Germans moved into Yankee territory after being expelled from Germany by Union troops under General Ulysses S Grant over fears that they might contribute to Confederate forces war effort. Many German families arrived in SchenECTADY early in 1865 due to joblessness and scarcity Of housing east of Buffalo while tensions were high between pro-Unionists (under control of Republican Governor De Witt Clinton) and pro-Confederate elements (controlled by Democratic Mayor Abram Hewitt). Many businesses closed or changed hands because many people could not afford to buy property or take on debt given Yankees had become so prosperous since reconstruction ended six years earlier! A number immigrant families brought their own cultural values with them as they searched for opportunity among a society that had changed dramatically since they'd been last ashore! It should be noted that many eastern Europeans who settled here did not share southern views about slavery; instead they sided with Lincoln's Union side until he resigned office following his defeat at Appomattox Court House some months later effectively ending American civil war (1865).
