Spring Valley is a small community located in the Town of Spring Valley, New York, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census and it is part of the Spring Valley–Bloomingdale Towns government. The first settler in Spring Valley was Elijah Snow who arrived in 1795. A post office called "Snow's Station" was established here in 1807. The name "Spring Valley" was given to the settlement by General George Washington during his visit to this area on April 12, 1786. The first school in Spring Valley were two-room schools built by Mr. Hildebrandt and Mrs. Grosse in 1827 and 1828. These schools were used for grades one through four until the establishment of a high school which opened on September 29, 1903. In 1624, Dutch traders arrived in the area and began trading with the Lenape. They also called this area "Hudson's Bay." The Dutch renamed the area Spring Valley after the spring that lay near their ship,the Vierge (the Virgin Mary). In 1627, a party of French traders came through this area and named it La Salle because they had heard about a springs of water located here. In 1634, General George Washington led an army through this region during his campaign against France. After he completed his campaign, he returned to New York and spent some time at Spring Valley before returning to Virginia in October of that year.
