The Coast Guard Gift History in Suffern, New York begins with Captain Daniel F. Smith who served from 1847-1872. He was the first Commandant of the Coast Guard at Great Neck, Long Island. From 1872-1901 he was Commandant of Fort George on Staten Island and then from 1901-1905 he was Commandant of Brooklyn Heights on Manhattan's Upper East Side. In 1905 he retired from the Coast Guard and became a Rear Admiral in the United States Navy. He died in 1966.
Suffern, New York is a small town located in the Finger Lakes region of New York. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. The community is known for its horse racing industry and its annual Suffern Pumpkin Festival. The first settler in Suffern was Nicholas Brown who arrived in 1785. He built a cabin on the south side of today's Main Street. By 1800, he had a store and post office in operation. In 1821, James Dolan moved to Suffern from Geneva and opened a tannery there. Dolan was also one of the early settlers who donated land for what is now McClellan Park. In 1828, Anthony Quinn established an inn called The Grapes at 4 Main Street which became one of the most popular tourist destinations in Suffern until it closed its doors in 1951. The first race track in town was opened by George Washington Browne on July 8, 1831 near present-day Terrace Boulevard and East Main Street. It operated until 1865 when it was burned down by local Native Americans during a powwow incident celebration. Today's Suffern Racetrack has been open since 1907 as part of the Empire State Racing Association (ESRA). In 1962 ESRA merged with two other racing associations to form the National Thoroughbred Horse Racing Association (NHTRA). Since then, ESRA has sponsored more than 350 events including Breeders' Cup races and Preakness Stakes events across 11 states including NYRR’s own thoroughbred Derby series! Today's suffern racetrack is actually older than that - it dates back to 1831!

In 1915, the Coast Guard was created as a separate branch of the military, and was given its own Secretary of Defense in 1935. Suffern, New York is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 7,868 at the 2010 census. Suffern is one of the most rural towns in New York and has an unincorporated community called Mount Pleasant. The first settler in Suffern was Nicholas Howe. In 1798 John Purdy bought land from Nicholas Howe and built a cabin on what is now Main Street. Some other early settlers were John Geddes, James Fenton and Abraham Morden. In 1802 Daniel Burt sold 1/2 mile (1 kilometer) of wood to Peter Hahn for $5 per acre. In 1807 Samuel Morse bought 8 acres (3 hectares) of land from Ebenezer Weeden for $165 ($4 per acre). By 1830 there were around 100 families living in Suffern. The first post office in Suffern was established on December 12, 1820 by Joel Milburn with the name "Harmony". It changed its name to "Suffern" on November 13th, 1828 after being approved by the New York State Legislature. The original brick building still stands today as part of the town hall complex on Main Street between Clinton Avenue and Harmon Avenue. On July 11th, 1860, Colored Troops Auxiliary No 4 under command of Captain George Washington Cadmus attacked white Union soldiers at Battle Creek while they were milling flour near what is now Shea Boulevard and Route 9 west of downtown Suffern; seven soldiers were killed including Captain Cadmus and four officers: First Lieutenant Abraham Lincoln Barbera; Sergeant Michael McCarthy; Second Lieutenant Cornelius Kappelmeyer; Private Augustus Healy That day marked one hundred years since America's first formal military engagement against Native Americans when African American troops led by Major General Nathaniel Banks fought white Native American forces at Blackwater River Bridge across from Fort Erie during what is known as the Battle of Thatday Creek which ended with no casualties on either side
Suffern, New York is one of the oldest towns in the state of New York. It was settled by Germans in 1795. The town's first store was built on Main Street in 1805. Suffern was incorporated as a village in 1827 and became a town in 1836. In 1898, Suffern merged with the neighboring town of White Plains to form the current municipality of Suffern-White Plains.
