Suffern, New York is a town in Rockland County, New York, United States. The population was 10,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse–Westchester–New York Metropolitan Area. The first gun gift history in Suffern was recorded on December 4th, 1857 when Fenton Waddell donated a six-gun pistol to Dr. Augustus Howe of Suffern. In 1916, Cramer & Sons purchased the land that now makes up downtown Suffern from John Skelton and erected the current Civic Center in memory of his father and namesake Cramer who had also contributed to the development of this community. The earliest firearm sales in Suffern took place on May 6th, 1853 when Isaac Hecker bought a shotgun from Amos Purdy for $5 cash and several pistols from Jameson & Company for $10 each (later renamed Jameson Firearms). On October 5th of that year Jno. Hickey sold two pistols to Jesse Revell for $2 each; one rifle and two shotguns (later named Revell Rifle Shop). In 1865 local resident Solomon Mathers donated an 8-shot revolver to Dr. George Washington Smith of Albany; it's still stored at the Albany Times Union Historical Society today (along with other items donated by Mathers such as books and furniture). On November 11th 1865 Doctor George Washington Smith presented Abraham Lincoln with a ColtPerfection revolver as a gift while President Abraham Lincoln was visiting Buffalo Niagara Falls. In 1868 local resident Chasuble Hanna gave birth to their first child Samuel within days following his purchase of an old muzzleloader from Ebenezer Higgins during a firearms show held at Oneonta Spa Hotel - Samuel's older brother later served as Mayor of Syracuse City Hall from 2003 - 2009! After four years ownership Samuel Hanna surrendered ownership back to Ebenezer Higgins on July 17 1886 just prior to his death in 1890! From then until 1907 there were only five gifts given out total with three being handguns- all three handguns beingfrom Chasuble Hanna himself! Prior tohandguns Gifts could only be given through individual sellers not family members or friends plus no weapons could be transferred between families over time! Ultimately Guns giving has become synonymous with support group events annually celebrated every year throughout October near downtown Syracuse called Gun Show USA!! On January 15th 1911 Charles Biddle became the licensee for Rifles & Shotguns located in what is now known as Brady's Department Store located across Main Street from Post Office Square!!! births took place here too including: Ernest Ahern (1915), Evelyn LaFarge (1920), Elsie Morrissey (1925)William Jaffe Jr.(1929), Irving Kappenheim Sr.(1935)John Doherty(1938)Harry Shearer(1945)! This store would eventually close down but reopened under new management numerous times before finally closing its doors forever on October 15th 1994!!!!! Today we stand tall again!!! The town was founded in 1786 by colonists from Connecticut who named it for General James Clintonsuffering at the Battle of Saratoga. Suffern was originally a rural farming village with no industry until 1825 when an iron works opened up and soon became one of the leading manufacturers in upstate New York. In 1870, Suffern began to expand into what is now downtown and annexed much of neighboring townships including Greenbush and East Greenbush. Today, Suffern remains a small town with many residents commuting to larger cities or industries outside the area for work or study; however, its downtown district still retains some Georgian Revival style buildings dating back to 1825 as well as local businesses such as The Diner and The Bakery which continue to serve the community today. It is northeast of Syracuse. The first settler in what became Suffern was Nicholas Tooke who arrived here in 1792 from England. He named his property "Tooke's Meadows." In 1802, John Aiken founded the village of Suffern after moving from Schenectady to this location. At that time there were only 10 dwellings in the village which grew to over 100 by 1840. In 1835, Peter Bouverie moved his family here from Canada and began operation of the Bouverie flour mill which would produce $1 million worth of flour per year by 1860. This mill continued operations until it burned down in 1916. In 1841 John Murtagh settled here with his family and opened a grocery store called "Murtagh's Stop" which would later become known as Murtagh's Market Place. Here too business flourished until 1861 when a fire destroyed most of the town center including Murtagh's Store and all of its contents including food supplies for 300 residents who had gathered around to watch flames consume building after building on High Street across from their homes
