Suffern, New York is a small town in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. The population was 7,823 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Syracuse-Schenectady-Troy Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settled in Suffern were Ulster Scots Presbyterians who arrived in 1778 from County Armagh, Ireland. A Presbyterian church and school was built in 1811 on a tract of land granted to Rev. John Caldwell by General Washington. The townseat was moved to what is now the center of town in 1871 when part of rural Fulton Township was annexed into Suffern. A post office called Suffern has been in operation since 1835. The present name, which means "sudden turn", came about because before the first store opened there were only two forks in the road leading to it, one leading south and one led north. The community had its start as a station on the Erie Railroad near Dunkirk (now Buffalo). When that line was destroyed by fire in 1906, suffern residents rebuilt it at their own expense using lumber brought down by the fire along with other materials they could salvage from their wrecked railway lines. In 1912, suffern became an unincorporated village under state jurisdiction; it remained so until 1959 when it became a full-fledged Towne within Syracuse County pursuant to an act passed by Congress known as An Act for Granting Localgovernment rights over Unincorporated Village formations within Syracuse County’s boundaries . When Interstate 81 bypassed Syracuse and went throughsuffERN instead (coming east), locals lobbied hard for this interchange to be built through their community so that jobs would go right through their streets and businesses wouldn't move out; eventually I-81 got built just outside town limits beside Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute but still Route 9 remains local routes that run parallel to each other just inside town limits today (see map). As early as 1916 photographs show what must have been quite an impressive scene: an entire block long lined with tan or brownstone houses dating back to around 1830 standing side by side without any intervening buildings between them! These well preserved examples are some of only a handful remaining today across most every large American city/town combination these days – examples can also be found as far away as Scranton PA and Blacksburg VA! These familiar old neighborhoods slowly began losing popularity during the 20th century due largely to suburban growth around them – but even today many families continue living close together behind gated communities throughout upstate New York regardless of whether they live where they grew up or not! Particularly interesting are those older neighborhoods which retain character despite having undergone changes such as new single family homes being replaced by multiple stories with garages - these are typically still considered “old timers” even though they may no longer have all their original properties . There has never been much change taking place within Suffern itself since its incorporation into Syracuse County more than 150 years ago: all basic services like schools, police & fire protection etc., remain unchanged either here or neighboring communities like Rome [New Rochelle], Elmira [Edwardsville], Auburn [Aurora] & Amherst [Amherst] have all kept pace with changing needs over time while larger municipalities like Syracuse have seen rapid growth & expansion . Although conditions may vary somewhat from day to day or neighborhood to neighborhood (due mostly to random events happening outside our control!), there seems genuinely nevertochange sense of community spirit among people who live hereabouts .

Suffern, New York is a small town in Greene County, New York, United States. The population was 2,824 at the 2010 census. Suffern is part of the Syracuse metropolitan area. The town was founded by colonists from Connecticut in 1786 and named for suffrage leader James Madison. After much civic activity and growth during the 1800s as a bedroom community for Syracuse, Suffern attained its current size in 1892 when it merged with neighboring towns of Unadilla and Weston to form Suffern-Unadilla Township. Census data from 2000 showed that the population had increased to 3,062 people. Today, Suffern’s downtown core retains its original architecture including two churches (St. Peter’s Episcopal Church dating back to 1793 and Stenhouse Presbyterian Church dating back to 1868) as well as several shops and restaurants including Macaroni Grill & Italian Restaurant (founded 1924), Bottega Veneta Shoes & Clothing Store (established 1928), The Lion’s Den Pub & Grille (founded 1954), and Blue Ribbon Catering Company (established 1984). The harbor district located on Main Street between State Route 315 and State Route 316 contains a variety of businesses such as seafood restaurants such as Joe's Seafood Place (opened 1973) which anchors the district's nightlife; retail stores such as Macy's Department Stores; an AMC theater; various housing developments; and an NFL stadium being built by the Buffalo Bills football team which will be located in nearby Loudonville across Frome Road from the former Union Carbide plant site now used by Clemson University football players prior to their games against North Carolina State University on September 3rd 2020.
