In the late 1800s and early 1900s, the Syracuse Navy was one of America's most powerful fleets. The navy played a significant role in America's victory in World War I and during World War II. The navy is also responsible for the city's present day reputation as a center of maritime culture and commerce. The Syracuse Navy began its existence as an armada of small boats that patrolled the open sea. By 1851, the navy had grown to include three ships, including a sloop-of-war. In 1861, Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt donated two warships to the Syracuse Navy, becoming its first commanding officer. The navy thrived during the Civil War because it could rely on coastal towns along our southern border to provide munitions and soldiers for the war effort. After the war ended, however, sailors were scarce so Commodore Vanderbilt donated three more ships to help fill our naval needs. These new vessels were called "Flaming Ships". During World War I, when America needed allies against Great Britain, we turned to Europe for help. However, Commodore Vanderbilt vetoed any European warships being sent home due to fears that they would be used by Germany instead. This led to America relying heavily on American destroyers and submarines for their military efforts in Europe during World War II. Today's Syracuse Naval Museum tells the story of this important time in history through artifacts from both before and after WWII with special emphasis on New York City Maritime History since 1898 thru today's Maritime Heritage program at Hunter College NYC

The USS Constitution (1802-1809) was a United States Navy steamship that served in the War of 1812. She was flagship of Commodore Isaac Hull's squadron that sailed from New York City on July 26, 1812, to attack and capture the Canadian vessel Hougoumont. The Constitution reached Quebec City on August 3, 1812, after a 14-day voyage. Hull's squadron burned the Hougoumont on August 6. The Constitution arrived at Norfolk, Virginia on October 8, 1812. She decommissioned there on December 15, 1814.
Syracuse, New York is a city on the southern tip of New York State. It is the seat of Orange County and is part of the Syracuse-Avon, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 173,831 in 2016, making it the 13th most populous city in New York City proper. The metropolitan area has a population of 568,723. Syracuse's history goes back to 1647 when English colonists arrived via ship from England. In 1850, local physician Drury Crouse founded what would become Central School of Medicine and Health Sciences which still flourishes today as one of America's leading medical institutions. The city was incorporated on November 3, 1871. On December 12, 1907, Syracuse became the capital of New York State after Albany was moved from Catskill to take its place as state capital due to concerns over financial instability in Albany at that time. After being an agricultural center for much of its history, Syracuse experienced heavy growth during the 1960s and 1970s with new high technology businesses emerging such as Xerox Corporation and IBM World Headquarters; these establishments have since departed or been replaced by larger entities such as Carrier Corporation (now United Airlines), Intel Xeon Chipset Technology Co., Hewlett-Packard Company (HP), Sycamore Partners LLC (a real estate investment trust) and DEC AlphaServer Corp.. As recently as 2000 however there were reports that major tech companies were considering leaving town due to economic conditions; this trend has reversed somewhat in recent years but remains a concern for residentsostenuating itself through job creation opportunities in other parts of the greater Syracuse/Avon area. In 2007–2008 Mayor Jens Stoltenberg appointed his predecessor’s daughter Jenna Stoltenberg to lead the city’s Economic Development Authority which focuses on creating jobs within the City limits whiletskyping support for business development initiatives including downtown revitalization projects totaling $27 million dollars with plans currently underway for more than 50 jobs across 10 different sectors including information technology services companies like Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Servers - servers used by many large corporations - electricians - plumbers - duct tape dispensers

The book had not been published before and was very rare for an American warship being donated outside of America. With help from some good people at JW Books online store we were able to order it online at a very reasonable price. The book was shipped quickly and arrived just in time for Christmas!

The first successful steamboat navigation on the Great Lakes was made by John Fitch and his brothers in 1814. The Erie Canal was completed in 1825, which connected Lake Ontario with New York City. Syracuse became an important city after the canal service began. The industry grew rapidly during the 19th century with a large population growth and new businesses being founded. Syracuse also played a significant role in the American Civil War as it was one of the few major cities to remain neutral during the conflict. After the war, Syracuse experienced rapid economic growth as manufacturing flourished and many technological advances were made in Syracuse thanks to railroad construction. In addition, Syracuse’s status as a center for higher education helped spur innovation and creativity throughout the city during this period.
