The Syracuse coffee scene started in the early 1800s. German immigrants, many of whom were farmers, began to settle in Syracuse and plant coffee beans. The first coffee house in town was founded by Adam Snyder in 1821. By 1830, there were six coffee houses operating in Syracuse. In 1834, Alexander Hamilton opened the first post office in the city and began receiving mail from New York City for coffee beans. In 1840, a group of businessmen organized the Syracuse Coffee Company and purchased two acres of land east of Market Street for a new processing center. The company built a warehouse and three stores on South Broad Street before turning its attention to manufacturing goods such as soap, flour and candles. In 1868-69, the company became part of American Tobacco Co.; however, it continued to produce chocolate milk until 1886 when it merged with Reynolds & Warburg Incorporated.

Syracuse is the county seat of Onondaga County and home to the main campus of Syracuse University. It is also an important center for commerce and industry. During World War II much activity took place here including assembly lines for munitions plants at Carrier Air Force Base and during Operation Neptune's Spear which saw US troops invade North Korea
