The name is derived from the original Tarrytown Township which was created in 1786 and named for Colonel John Tarry who fought in the American Revolution. Tarrytown is a small town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 3,371 at the 2000 census. It is part of the New York City metropolitan area. The name Tarrytown comes from the Irish place Tuamhac (now Tarrytown), which means "a place where cattle are pastured." The first settler in what would become Tarrytown was James Doherty, who arrived in 1777 and named it after his home country on the other side of Ireland. In 1814, Nicholas Biddle bought land that included present-day Tarrytown from John Doherty, and developed it into a small village with a post office and two stores. By 1828, there were ten residents in Tary Town; by 1850, there were twenty-eight residents. In 1868–69, an act to create a new town in westchester county was passed by the state legislature; and on March 14th of that year – even before any towns had been laid out – TaryTown's first building lot was sold to Nathaniel Lyon for $500 cash. The boom years for rural westchester followed; businesses sprang up all over town: grist mills (built around 1860), cheese factories (1876–79), flour mills (1892–93), sawmills (1902), livery stables (1907). But by 1910 only five families remained in Tary Town: four men who ran the grocery store and one woman who cooked meals for the workers at night. Industrialization changed everything: sandstone quarries closed down throughout western New York during World War I; production dropped by half between 1925 and 1940 because of strenuous competition from Japanese manufacturers; but when war ended and reconstruction began, business picked up again as farmers returned to their farms. During this time too much traffic generated dust problems that led to development of grit bowls along Main Street called "The Grit Bowls" today remembrance sites with interpretive signs about how those days were like back then In 1951 when local historian Irving Howe wrote "A History of Our Village", he noted some changes since his book's publication including increased numbers of people commuting outside town due to improved schools within walking distance; faster growth during 1960s due to availability of new housing developments near downtown which made shopping opportunities available close at hand for larger blocks than ever seen before directly across First Avenue from Third Street Railway Station
