The town was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1786 as Tarrytown Supply and Manufacturing Village. The name comes from the Irish word "tara," meaning place or settlement. The village had a post office from 1811 to 1868 and a school from 1812 to 1865. In 1885, Tarrytown became an incorporated town under the name of Albany Township. In 1949, it changed its name back to Tarrytown again after becoming an independent municipality within the current adjudicators district for Albany County. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. It is bordered by Ithaca Township to the south-southwest, Oneida Township to the east-northeast, Seneca Lake to the north-northwest, Aurora Township to the west-northwest and Rome Township to their north respectively; these borders give an overall size difference only slightly greater than that between Tioga City proper - which occupies much broader territory - and nearby Scranton/Wilkes-Barre which administratively falls within both Ithaca (to its south) and Rome (to its northwest) township limits but geographically straddles nothing else within those two municipalities or any other localities within either township boundaries save for one small hamlet directly acrossriver from Tioga Bridge: Tarrytown itself!
