Tarrytown is a small town in upstate New York, located on the banks of the Hudson River. It was first settled by Dutch settlers in 1624 and was originally called Tappan Zee. The name "Tarrytown" comes from the Irish word táirgheann, meaning "the stretch of water where boats can be put ashore." The first settler in Tarrytown was John Doane, who arrived in 1624. He built a gristmill on the river and named his settlement after his native Ireland, Tarragona. In 1686, Nicholas Douglass founded Douglass Tavern in what is now downtown Tarrytown. From here he began to trade with New York City and provide goods for local farmers. In 1764, General George Clinton traveled through Tarrytown on his way to battle at Saratoga Springs. While there he stopped at Douglass Tavern for dinner and ordered nine pizzas. When he got back to New York he brought those pizzas back to Albany and ate them at his hotel room before going into battle the next day! In 1812, Cornelius Vanderbilt established himself as an early stockholder in the Erie Canal Company and started construction of what is now known as Vanderbilt's Hall (now part of the National Museum of American History). When it opened in 1814, Tarrytown became one of its initial stops. Over time it grew into an important commercial center with its own currency - the "taryton". During World War II many residents left their homes for military service or internment camps across upstate New York; however, few details about this period exist aside from anecdotes passed down from veterans or friends/family members involved during that time period. In 1945-1946 most of Tarrytown burned down due to flooding caused by heavy rains which had been exacerbated by Hurricane Joan earlier that year; however some buildings did survive including Douglass Tavern which reopened shortly afterwards as a brokerage firm known asDouglass & Company Inc..
