The National Guard of the United States of America was first organized on November 15, 1792, in Tarrytown, New York as a militia regiment. The unit served through the American Revolution and post-Revolutionary period until it was disbanded on September 9, 1802. In 1815, the New York State Legislature created the New York State Militia to serve in lieu of the defunct Tarrytown Regiment. The regiment served until 1840 when it was again disbanded by state authorities. On July 5, 1861, during the American Civil War, the 2nd Battalion of Company D of the 1st Brigade (line infantry) of General Ulysses S. Grant’s Armyof Tennessee was mustered into service at Utica by Governor John A. Andrew as part of that state’s military forces. That same day also saw musterings for other companies from both states in support of Grant’s army totaling almost 10,000 men. During its 29-year existence as a national guard unit, Company D lost six members killed or mortally wounded in action and 27 officers and men who died from causes such as disease or accident; this is tied for second most among all NGF units which have been actively engaged in war since its inception.
