During World War II, there were several large-scale air raids on Tarrytown: On July 16, 1944, three planes bombed and destroyed many buildings in downtown; four days later two more bombs hit what is now Orchard Park before hitting a power plant; and again on August 8th - this time destroying almost all buildings south of Main Street On September 22nd 1945 Soviet bombers dropped thousands of incendiary bombs on houses near Millbrook Dam killing about 200 people There have been few major incidents since then but some residents are concerned about development around their former neighborhoods which they fear could damage their infrastructure or turn them into ghost towns like neighboring Schenectady .
