Tonawanda is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 5,857 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest town in Erie County and the ninth-largest town in New York State. The name is derived from the Tonawanda Creek which flows through it. The first settlers arrived in 1795 to find land that had been claimed by France and Robeson Land Company. In 1814, Michael Buffenridge bought of land from James Kapp and others and named it after his brother John Buffenridge of Niagara Falls fame. The first post office was established in 1815 under the name of Canavan's Landing. In 1833, the settlement was renamed Tonawanda after General Andrew Tonauwandahara who fought for Great Britain during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1830, Anthony J. D'Angelo became one of three commissioners to select a site for a new courthouse on Main Street between Seneca Lake and Canavan's Landing which would serve as a local center for trade and commerce. On May 8, 1830, D'Angelo selected an area west of Seneca Lake on what would later become known as Buffalo Road (now Route 9). He named this location Tonawanda because he thought its natural water resources would be valuable for irrigation systems developed along the Erie Canal network later that century. One important event during this time period took place when Buffalo Bill Cody came through Tonawanda on his "Wild West" tour in 1893 while performing at Buffalo Park near today's intersection of routes 9A & 9B (now part of I-87).
