The United States Army has a long and honorable history in Troy, New York. The city was once a center of military activity due to its strategic location on the Susquehanna River. The city also played a significant role in the American Revolution, hosting many of the initial skirmishes and battles. In recent years, however, Troy's military tradition has been overshadowed by larger developments within the city. Troy was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1624. The area that now includes Troy was part of British North America until 1783, when it became part of the United States of America. During the Revolutionary War, General Washington called upon the local militia to help defend his frontier outpost against invading Native Americans. Because of this commitment to defense, many members of the local community came to support their Patriot compatriots during the war. After independence was achieved, soldiers from both sides began streaming into town for various reasons (including money and recruits). Eventually, there were too few troops available to garrison all of Troy's streets and buildings could not accommodate everyone who wanted to join up. This led to tension between civilian and military residents over access to land and resources; eventually an agreement was made whereby citizens would be allowed onto army property only if they contributed towards upkeep or special operations missions. "In 1793-94 Major General George Washington founded what is now West Point Military Academy here in anticipation that young men from nearby towns might pursue an education under arms." Although no longer Needed for Militia Duty after 1783., Troops continued being quartered at various locations throughout town until 1802 when all Troops were disbanded at Fort Niagara . Some units stayed behind as skeleton forces until 1812 when they were reactivated as part of Second Brigade under hero General Anthony Wayne . After this time most units returned home . By 1860 there were still around 650 active duty males serving with Ft Monroe Garrison which included about 120 officers ." Today there are just over 100 active duty male service members at Ft Monroe Garrison including about 40 Officers

Troy is a city in the U.S. state of New York on the Susquehanna River. The population was 93,822 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Schoharie County and one of its most populous cities. Troy is also home to two colleges, Western New York University and Cortland Community College. The first people to live in what is now Troy were the Lenape Native Americans who hunted and fished along the riverbanks. The area that wouldlater become Troy was settled by Dutch farmers in 1624, who named it after General Hendrick de Valkenburgh, leader of a Dutch army invading North America from Holland. As part of Long Island, New York, Albany became the capital of New York State in 1785; Troy thus became an important commercial center during this time period. In 1814, when Fort Erie was built on land that later became east side of town (now northside), residents petitioned for annexation into Buffalo as part of that city's efforts to gain control over much of western Niagara County. However, Buffalo refused to let Troy annex because it considered itself "the real" Capital City. In 1836–37, with cash from Buffalo's surplus wartime military budget and donations from citizens across the country including John Quincy Adams and Bishop Tuttle – both Rochesterians – Troy constructed its first schoolhouse & other public buildings- all while living off farming fees levied against owners of farms within 1 mile (1 km) of their homes! These early pioneers are remembered through annual Pioneer Day events which commemorate their achievements & remind local students about their predecessors' struggles & successes! In 1857–58, when gold seekers discovered gold near by on Una Mesa bluff overlooking town Centerbrook (now southwest corner Of downtown Troy), settlers began arriving en masse to exploit what they saw as an natural resource unprecedented anywhere else on Long Island at this time!! Mines were established soon thereafter but production stopped due to difficult ground conditions & low prices for gold: only $2 per ounce ($0.27 per pound)! Nonetheless many people lived & worked around these mines until1860 when new veins were found nearby which resumed production! During this time many families moved into organized neighborhoods including Lawrence Avenue (& surrounding areas). During World War I veteran’s pensions were proclaimed effective January 1st 1915 retroactive up to December 31st 1914; accordingly veterans started receiving payments even before armistice ended! This resulted in large numbers of men coming backinto town which caused some political instability… For example Mayor Fenton tried unsuccessfullyto get his own re-election campaign funded by selling pork rather than treasury bonds! After Armistice Ended veterans returned home but businesses remained closed as unemployment soared; businesses reopened once Bonus material amountingto $500K had come ashore….most notably Bankers Trust Company where prominent citizens such as George Clinton Sr., John D Rockefeller Jr., Cornelius Vanderbilt III metamorphosedfrom earlier “pensioners” into largeBusinessmen overnight!!! On November 11th 1918 during WWI Veterans Day parade held in honorof Gen JQAAdams our 5th mayor announced plans for village green development adjacent thereto w/ accompanying parkland…..First sod was cut for village green just southwest cornerOf Main Street w/ accompanying playground…….. construction continued thru 1920 thanks largely tobuyer labor….. Executive Order 9396qd stated Village Green Development zoning regulations should be codified hereinunder…. After 3 yearsAbandonment Notice was given dated September 15th 1924 naming corporate officersresponsible FOR development OFVillage Green notwithstanding any prior Abandonment Notices previously issued thereunder…… A final abandonment noticewas givendated January 2nd 1927 naming no officers responsible BUT development proceeded nonetheless!!!!! All files associated with VillageGreen Development have been destroyed since then!!!!!!!!!! Within 10 years after abandoningvillageGreens programming commenced w/various organizations occupying abandoned building complex…Over 100 organizations participated therein thruout 1951!!!!! Today no organization remains vacant or inactive withingrovincial limits!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Troy, New York is a town in Chenango County, New York, United States. The population was 12,527 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest town in Chenango County and the sixth-largest municipality in New York State. Troy is located on the eastern edge of the Finger Lakes region and east of Syracuse. The first settlers of what would become Troy arrived from England in 1785. The town was founded on July 6, 1811 by Major General John Brownell as part of his attempt to resettle Loyalists who had fled to Canada during the American Revolution. The town's name came from Captain George Washington's flagship USS Constitution (1797), which stopped at Rotterdam while on its way to America with reinforcements following victory over British troops at Saratoga that year. Troy experienced several waves of growth until World War II when it lost much of its commercial and workforce due to proximity to war industries and military bases. However, since then it has regained some key businesses including a hospital and two shopping malls. In addition, there have been many advances made in Troy such as new libraries and several dozen new homes being built since 2000 thanks to a housing development initiative spearheaded by Mayor Richy Chilcott along with private developers; this has helped bring about significant revitalization efforts throughout the community both inside and outside of school buildings Today, Troy remains an important center for commerce within Chenango County as well as for cultural attractions throughout central New York due in no small part to its rich history and culture
