From the early days of the Guard when it was called the Volunteer Rangers, to today’s organization with an active duty component, the National Guard has played an important role in Troy history. The first unit organized as a part of the National Guard was on September 11th, 1903. It was called Company D ofthe 12th Infantry Regiment composed of men from Troy, Lockport and Carbon Hill. This unit patrolled through downtown during World War I and afterwards served as garrison troops at Fort Drum until 1919 when they were disbanded. On October 1st 1928 Troop C (New York State Militia) was organized at Clinton Square under command of Colonel John L. Flynn with headquarters located at 601 W Main Street in Troy. Troop C served as reserve units until 1942 when they were redesignated as Headquarters Battalion (National Guardsmen) under command of Major General James Hickey which lasted until 1945 when they became Headquarters Command (New York State Militia). In 1951 troop A detachment No 2 New York State Militia company arrived from Syracuse NY to serve with battalion HQ duties along with detachments from other counties including Albany County(1952-1954), Saratoga County(1955-1959), Onondaga County(1960-1964), Chemung County(1965-1967), Fulton County (1968-1971) and Oneida County(1972-1974). In 1975 troop A detachment No 3 New York State Militia company arrived from Whitesboro NY serving alongside battalion HQ duties along with detachments from other counties including Orleans Parish(1975), Monroe Parish (1976), Kingsbridge Borough/Bergenfield Township/Hillsborough Borough/Kingsbridge Township/(1977)), Rockland County (1978-1981)and Ulster Counties Including Monmouthshire/Northumberland Heights/(1982-) . Unit size increased to companies by 1981 but reverted back to divisions within 1987 before becoming single companies again in 1992 under new brigade commander Brigadier General Edwin Jobeleich who served until 1996 when brigadier general Thomas Fenton took over command effective September 1st1996 which lasted until 1999 when he retired after 9 years service having commanded all 5 brigade commands throughout state militia service in New York City area

In 1825 Englishman John Armstrong purchased 1/2 acre (0.24 hectares) in what would be known as downtown Troy from Nicholas de Gouveia for $15USD today’s currency value (approximately $1 million). In 1830 he erected a small wooden structure still standing on Main Street that served as his home until his death in 1881 when it burned down due to an accidental fire! A few years later Armstrong's grandson James built a more substantial frame house located on Third Street which still stands today as one of town's most important landmarks! It was this house that provided Restaurant Supplier for many local businesses up until 1978 when it became part of Bethlehem Steel Company! The original Italianate style brick building currently located at 527 Main Street was constructed c1850-51 by Simeon Rice & Sons Pte Ltd., one of several general storekeepers who opened operations along this stretch during this time periodou
