The history of the Coast Guard in Valley Stream, New York goes back to 1854. The first Coast Guard station was at the present-day Cove Park on Long Island. The first enlisted member of the Coast Guard was Samuel Fenton, who served from 1854-1855. In 1857, a new station was built at Northport Harbor on Long Island. The Coast Guard Station Valley Stream became operational on December 10th, 1858. In 1921, the Coast Guard Station Valley Stream merged with the New York State Patrol and Headquarters were moved to Jersey City, New Jersey in 1922. In 1951, when Valley Stream became a city, it decided to keep its own police department which still exists today as part of the City of Valley Stream Police Department. Today, the Coast Guard Auxiliary provides support for law enforcement activities including harbor patrol and search and rescue missions; bomb disposal; water safety; public health patrols; and special events such as Memorial Day and Fourth of July fireworks displays.

She was re-designated CG Cutter No. 5 in 1966 and continued serving as a patrol vessel until she was retired in 1984. In 1992, she was transferred to the National Park Service and operates as a museum ship at Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island.
