Valley Stream is a town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 3,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Muskegon-Holland Regional School District. Valley Stream is known for its three valleys: the East River valley, which includes portions of Clinton and Hollandtown; the West River valley, which includes parts of White Lake and Mount Pleasant; and the Great Lakes area, which includes parts of Harbor Springs and Battle Creek. The first humans to live in what is now Valley Stream were Paleo-Indian people who lived near what is now Old Fort Wayne on the banks of the Huron River. In 1647, Englishman John Endicott founded a trading post called Fort Amsterdam on this site where he built an artillery tower that still stands today. When British traders started arriving in Michigan during the 17th century they began to trade with Native Americans such as the Potawatomi and Chippewa. One group of British traders named themselves The Company because they wanted to establish a monopoly on trade with Indian nations (the Dutch had done this before). They also named their new post after themselves – Valley Forge – so that other traders would know not to come too close to their fort without getting permission from them first. In 1795, United States President George Washington granted land near present-day Valley Stream to Colonel James Kapp as part of his land grant program following his victory over Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown Naval battle. After Kapp's death in 1802, his nephew John Kapp took control of Valley Forge until 1805 when Congress passed legislation incorporating it into Michigan Territory under then Territorial Governor Joseph Aloysius Wright (1800-1875). As part of federal lands policy during the Revolutionary War period, New York State contributed about one million acres (4 square miles) along both sides of major river valleys – including most notably those around Vallecito Lake and White Lake – in order to enable soldiers from New York City based at Detroit Barracks onDetroit Peninsula to march southward along these routes providing supplies for General George Washington’s army as needed while still being able see over open ground beyond rifle range for command purposes. This strategic location made it possible for General Washington’s forces commanders on either side of Detroit Peninsula— Major General Nathanael Greene commanding Continental Army troops north against Quebec Province commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Robert Livingston—to direct operations from positions overlooking both Upper Canada and Lower Pennsylvania without ever having had any contact with either side’s units directly concerned! Valley Stream was incorporated as a village within Muskegon County on December 12th 1868 by act authority vested in said county commissioners by section 8125(1) OF THE MICHIGAN STATUTES AS FOLLOWS: “That there be erected hereinto a Village according unto Statute...Valley Stream...comprising foursquare miles... subject thereto all rights incident thereto or appertaining thereto including all water courses therein appertaining...” On February 6th 1870 trustees appointed by Commissioners Cornelius Vanderbilt Dodge (1821-1920), Augustus Prentice Whitney (1827-1900), Isaac Nourse Mortimer (1798-1865), Lucius Stevens Childress (1812-1882) voted $2 per acre towards erection cost thereof etc., meeting again March 5th 1870 vide agenda item 2 hereinabove mentioned & ordered plenary meeting accordingly Thereafter meetings were held monthly until completion said Village having been duly organized under said statute & placed upon an assessed valuation thereofpending final plat thereof There are currently 4 properties valued at $151K each located within Village limits Surveyor certified
