Valley Stream, New York is a town in the Finger Lakes region of New York State. The population was 7,814 at the 2010 census. Valley Stream is one of five towns in the Town of Westchester that are part of the Village of Morrisville and are served by Morrisville School District. Valley Stream was founded on November 3, 1784, when Major John Sullivan's force arrived to take possession of Fort Niagara after its capture by British General Cornwallis. The town was named for Colonel George Washington's Valley Forge encampment in Pennsylvania. The first store in Valley Stream opened on October 1, 1835. Two years later, Rev. James Ladd established Chapel Street Methodist Episcopal Church and started selling communion wafers from his home on High Street between Main and South Streets. In 1839-1840, Mr. David Swayne built a sawmill on the stream near present day Milton Avenue and Damen Road for producing lumber for local churches and homes which he sold to settlers throughout the area. At this time ValleStream had a population of around 100 people; it grew rapidly during Reconstruction with many new businesses opening up including various stores, hotels (the earliest being Fenton’s Store), banks (First National Bank), livery stable/carriage barns (George Aiken’s), blacksmiths (John Bogue), shoe factory (Fenwick & Fenwick) as well as dwellings (Hugh Cogswell). In 1916–1917 there were several small fires that destroyed most or all of Valley Stream's downtown business district including much important historic architecture such as Hargrave & Company store which became known as "the burning building" due to widespread damage done to its facade by fire over several days while it was open for business; First National Bank building also sustained significant damage but reopened within weeks thereafter; other notable losses included Mrs Hargrave’s House which burned down sometime between 1915-16; former Masonic Temple which collapsed following a large storm in 1936; Union Carbide plant across from river destroyed by bombing during World War II but rebuilt afterwards - now known as Sam Boyd Silver Mine After World War II many businesses closed due to lack of customers or competition from larger companies such as IBM and Kodak who opened up shop in nearby Rochester or Syracuse instead In 1957-1958 Bethlehem Steel Corporation made an investment intoValley Stream allowing them access to what is now called “The Gorge” valley where they constructed numerous factories over the next few decades contributing significantly to village growth including creating original land uses such as housing developments called “Valleystream Heights” today home to various senior living facilities etc., despite opposition from residents who claimed that these factories were not needed given improved transportation links available throughdevelopment adjacentto villages like Vestal Hills . Valley Stream is a small town in the Catskills of New York. It was chartered on December 17, 1797 by Nicholas Bemis and James Clinton as the town of Valley Stream. The first settler in Valley Stream was Nicholas Bemis, who moved from Connecticut in 1795. The original name of the town was Prospect Heights until 1802 when it changed to VALLEY STREAM after a stream that ran through it. Valley Stream became an incorporated village on May 14, 1898. On November 15th, 1920, population had grown to 1,500 people and the name was changed again to VALLEY SPRINGS after another stream that flowed through it. The history of Valley Stream can be traced back to its incorporation as a village. A store and post office were built there in 1898-99 by George Wetherington and his son David Wetherington II. In 1907-08 a school district was organized with ValleyStream as one of its townships. That same year saw the opening of the first movie theater in upstate New York when the Empire Theatre opened at 516 Main Street in Vallelstream Township. In 1911, two brothers named Harry and Milton Kessler founded Kessler’s Drug Store at 4 Main Street which served as their headquarters for many years before moving downriver to 147 Main Street in 1980 where they still operate today under their old name (Kessler Drugs). In 1922 Harry Kessler donated land next door to his store for what would become Park Avenue Shopping Center which anchored much of downtown Valley Stream until it closed down around 1990 due to competition from larger shopping centers statewide.
