The United States Army Garrison of Watertown, New York was established in 1792 and served as a military post until 1802. The garrison was responsible for the defense of the town and its surrounding area. In 1802, the garrison was transferred to Fort Stanwix in Albany, New York. The fortifications were destroyed by fire in 1814 and the garrison relocated to Fort Washington in Buffalo, New York. The fortifications were abandoned in 1825 and the garrison disbanded on October 15th that year.
Watertown is a town in Rockland County, New York, United States. The population was 25,167 at the 2010 census. Watertown is part of the Utica–Rome, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Watertown were Dutch colonists who arrived from Holland in 1626 and established a trading post on the North River. The first English colonists were also Dutch but they moved to upper Manhattan and founded Westchester County in 1664 as part of the Dutch colonization of New Netherland. In 1725, when Thaddeus Stevens became speaker of the New York State Assembly and later Attorney General under George Washington, he located a tavern on Meeting Street (now State Street) in what is now Watertown. Stevens renamed it "Newburgh" after his home town of Nassau on Long Island and began to attract traders and other business people to his new town. In 1785, during King George III's tour through New York state, he stopped at Watertown for dinner at the Stevens Tavern where he was entertained by local officials. In 1814, John Armstrong founded Armstrong Brewery in what is now Watertown and soon became one of the most important brewing companies in America. Armstrong's brewery survive until today with operations continuing near downtown Watertown into present day. AfterArmstrong's death in 1849, his son James succeeded him as head brewer at Armstrong Brewery before becoming president of Anheuser-Busch Companies (later Budweiser). In 1957 water utility companyalanx purchased Armstrong Brewing Company which continued production until 1993 when it closed its doors permanently due to economic decline; however Class A liquor sales continued until 1999 when all beer production was discontinued by that company as well. Today only soft drinks are made from old Armstrong IPA recipes at this site employing over 60 workers including 20 brewers who make kegs for distribution throughout New England . During World War II many residents evacuated or left for safe havens such as Canada because warplanes based at nearby Ogdensburg could see much activity within their towns without hitting them directly; some 3200 citizens chose to leave their homes during those two years with over 2000 businesses closing down along with 6000 jobs lost although most residents returned once war ended After World War II many small businesses did not reopen because so few jobs had been available following the end of hostilities; these closures included more than 1000 buildings that were either sold or abandoned

The town was founded by General John Stark in 1795 and named for his birthplace, Watertown, Massachusetts. The first settler in what is now Watertown was Nicholas Benziger. He came to the area from German Village on Staten Island in 1796. There were also several families who immigrated to Watertown from Connecticut during the mid-19th century: the Smiths, Fergusons, and Daytons among them. Watertown became an incorporated village on April 12, 1856 under the name of Norwich. On July 1st of that year it merged with the neighboring town of Westchester to form one municipality with a population of 3400 people (two times as large as Norwich). Over time other municipalities have been annexed into Watertown; most recently it gained territory from Strongsville on November 15th 2009 and has a current population of 16,741 residents
Watertown was settled in 1754 by settlers from Connecticut. The town was named for the river that ran through it, the Putnam. In 1812, it became a state capital.
