Watertown, New York is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 54,564 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest municipality in the state of New York and one of the most rural towns in America. Watertown was founded by Connecticut Yankee Christopher Waddingale on what is now the north side of Main Street in 1781 as a trading post for fur traders traveling through the region. The first store in Watertown was built on what is now State Street by Elias Howe in 1814. In 1826, John A. Macdonald became the first Canadian Prime Minister when he served as Mayor of Watertown from 1827 to 1830. The town developed rapidly due to its location near Lake Ontario and its access to trade with other parts of North America. By 1860, about two-thirds of all jobs in Watertown were related to agriculture or manufacturing. In 1872, during Ohio’s “ Reconstruction” era, water power was discovered along Canandaigua Creek and began supplying water to downtown Toronto; however, Toronto did not extend much help to Watertown because it wanted a monopoly over supplies offered by Niagara Falls and Buffalo Niagara Harbor respectively. In 1899–1900 Buffalo Niagara Harbor completed an electric generating station that made possible widespread use of electricity for lights and transportation within Buffalo (the first municipally owned electric utility), while also providing power for industry outside of Buffalo proper; this led directly to increased development around the harbor area including Watertown which experienced rapid growth during this period due to easy access to electricity and new transportation options available thanks to improved infrastructure developments such as canals and railways

Watertown is located on the southern bank of the Chenango River and has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 500 years. In 1764, General George Washington moved his army from Cambridge to what is now Watertown after suffering a crushing defeat at Trenton. In 1814, as part of the Second Seminole War, American forces burned down much of what is now downtown Watertown in an effort to drive out the Seminoles. The town was incorporated as a village in 1825 and became a city in 1903.
