Watertown, New York is a town in Olean County, New York, United States. The population was 11,813 at the 2000 census. It is the largest town in Olean County by area and has a land area of 38 square miles (111 km²). The name Watertown comes from the Iroquois word watora meaning "place where water flows." The first settlement in what would become Watertown was founded by Loyalists who fled the British execution of Shays's Rebellion in 1787. They named their new community after General George Washington's chief military advisor and friend, Colonel John Sullivan. In 1812, under the terms of the Treaty of Utica, all Native Americans were to be removed from this region except for those living on Long Island Sound. Consequently, only those in Watertown remained until 1830 when they were forced to leave again due to violence between colonists and natives. In 1824, Congress passed an act that created five townships within Olean County: Athens Township (northwest corner), Center Township (southwest corner), Clinton Township (east side), Delaware Township (northwest corner), and Oneida Township (southwestern corner). These townships were divided into sectional boroughs which became responsible for local government within their respective boroughs. By 1870, only Athens Township remained unincorporated with full municipal powers while all other sections had been incorporated as villages or hamlets within their respective boroughs.
