The United States Air Force has a long history of giving gifts to the people and communities in West Haverstraw, New York. The USAF heartfeltly remembers Sgt. Joe Kapp (1910-2002), an American airman who lost his life in World War II. Kapp's memory is deeply entrenched in the USAF community and continues to be invoked when USAF members or officials give presentations on Air Force programs or services. Sgt. Joe Kapp was born in 1910, just after America entered World War I. By the time he enlisted in the USAF, he had already fought during two wars and been wounded multiple times. As an airman with the Ninth Air Force at Misawa Airport near Tokyo during World War II, Sgt. Joe made an impact on countless lives by sacrificing his own time and health for his country's war effort. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism under enemy fire while serving as leader of a squadron engaged in combat against Japanese forces at Okinawa Prefecture on April 18, 1945--eleven days after Japan surrendered unconditionally to Allied Forces! Kapp's death remains one of aviation history's most tragic tales--a reminder that no single act can determine success or failure in military campaigns overseas; it takes teamwork and coordination between all participating units to achieve victory. In honor of Sgt. Joe Kapp's legacy, The United States Air Force Foundation has established numerous scholarships and awards specifically dedicated to honoringAir Force members who have given their all for our nation--from home front to global missions!

West Haverstraw is a small town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It lies on the east bank of the Mohawk River opposite Niagara Falls. The area now comprising West Haverstraw was first settled by Europeans in 1772. The village of West Haverstraw grew up around a Methodist church and one schoolhouse. In 1837, local farmers formed the Village Improvement Society to improve agriculture and build roads and dwellings. The society also bought two lots of land on which to build a community hall and other public buildings. In 1847, the first post office was opened in West Haverstraw; it continued to serve until 1861. At that time, the village became part of Sullivan County. In 1893, the county seat moved from Buffalo to Niagara Falls; however, West Haverstraw remained an independent town until 1931 when it merged with neighboring East Aurora into one municipality under new government rules. On January 1, 1957, all municipalities in Sullivan County were dissolved and replaced by a single entity called Tioga County; however, East Aurora kept its own name until 1961 when that too changed to Westchester County. Today's population of 1,898 lives within walking distance of several shopping centers as well as schools and churches including First Presbyterian (founded in 1892), Stroudsburg Area High School (established in 1955), and John Jay College Preparatory School (established 1969).

After that experience, they began designing airplanes and developed what is considered to be the world’s first successful powered plane – the Kitty Hawk. In 1912, they founded The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), which helped bring about World War II. They also donated $5 million to NASA in 1944 as part of the “Gift from America” program. This was one of many occasions when the USAF showed its support for NASA during its early years. 2) Franklin D Roosevelt Franklin D Roosevelt was president from 1933 until his death in 1945. He was known for his aggressive New Deal policies which aimed to improve economic conditions for Americans. One particular issue he focused on was helping get America into World War II – an effort he called “The Greatest Generation”. He also contributed money to numerous causes within the military and aerospace industries throughout his career including donating millions toward development of jet aircraft and missiles. West Haverstraw, New York is a town located in the towns of North Haverstraw and South Haverston on the shores of Long Island Sound. The population was 3,824 at the 2010 census. It was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1624. The name comes from where it stands, above the tidal waves: "Wetland heersten" or "Island fortress." The area now known as West Haverstraw was first part of what is now called Northumberland County. In 1664, General John Johnson destroyed the fort at Weehawken and captured Easton Point, setting off a long-running conflict with the English settlers over control of this strategic point on Long Island Sound. In 1777, during the American Revolution, Colonel Benedict Arnold led an attack against British forts at Westchester Heights and Fort Salerno on Islip Neck in what is now Nassau County. After Arnold's victory (over Major Jervis), many British soldiers were killed or captured and their equipment abandoned in these hills overlooking NY Harbor. ! After independence came about in 1776, much of what is now Westchester County became part of New York State under George Washington's command; however, portions including present-day West Haverston remained within Albany County until 1821 when it became part of Long Island City proper. The village began to take form around this time with small farms scattered around its fertile shoreline bluff overlooking Nassau Bay and Indian Head Pond. A post office opened in 1814; but it closed due to mail being delivered only to Albany then continuing onward to Brooklyn through Canandaigua before reaching Hempstead eventually terminating at Weehawken which lay just upstream from today's town center waterfront development becoming increasingly developed with larger plantations taking over parcels along both banks of Sandy Hook Creek starting about 1840s -With increasing exports via steamboats arriving here bringing new life & wealth into town lots started popping up all along waterfront
On the banks of the river Haverstraw, there is a long and varied history dating back to pre-European times. The area was first settled by the Lenape Native Americans, who were displaced by European colonists in the late 17th century. In 1664, English settlers arrived in what is now Westchester County and began farming the land. By 1812, most of present-day New York had been acquired by United States president James K. Polk during the Mexican–American War. In 1831, portions of Westchester County were annexed to New York City as part of a larger effort to reunite all of New York under one government. In 1835, Westchester County became part of new New York state following its admission into the Union as a result ofthe American Civil War. In 1868, it was reorganized as an independent county within New York state following ratification ofthe US Constitution via popular vote. The county has since remained relatively stable with few major changes throughout its history.
