Westbury is a small town in upstate New York, located on the west side of the Mohawk River. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Westbury is considered part of the Saratoga Springs area. The first people to live in what is now Westbury were LenapeIndians. In 1614, English colonists arrived and founded a village on the east bank of the Mohawk River called Wappingers Falls. In 1764, British troops burned down all of Wappingers Falls and began moving settlers westward across the Mohawk River as part of General George Washington's land survey. In 1768, British troops burned down another Indian village in what is now Westbury Village and moved into this territory. In 1812, when Erie Canal was completed through central New York City (and beyond), traders and farmers reached Westbury by boat from Peekskill on Long Island Sound. By 1820, there were over sixty families living in what is now Westbury Village. One year later, during an agricultural depression caused by bad weather during winter months, local farmers voted to build one mile wide road between their villages to improve access to markets for their products. The townspeople soon realized that this new route would provide them with easy access to education and industry within easy reach – both came soon after when Buffalo’s Erie Canal opened in 1825! Westbury became an important center for trade because it had a good location for shipping goods long distances due to its close proximity to multiple rivers and canals as well as its many lakes and ponds! By 1830, businesses such as breweries, tanneries and gristmills had arrived here too with help from entrepreneurs like General John Lyon who donated land for these purposes! Westbury, New York is a small town in central Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Westbury is one of the original towns inSullivan County. It was first settled in 1785 by colonists from Rhode Island and named for John Westbury, an officer in the British Army who had been wounded at Saratoga. In 1812, it became part of the new Erie Canal Zone. The town's initial development was based on its location on the western edge of what is now Sullivan County and its access to the canal system. The first post office opened in 1785 and was called "Westbury". By 1800, there were several stores and a church around which a community developed. A school was built in 1802 and remained operational until 1953. A millinery shop opened in 1814 and became known as "the world's oldest continuously operated lace shop". In 1827, construction began on the Erie Canal which would give Westbury easy access to markets all over New York City - making it one of the earliest boomtowns along that route. In 1850, gold was discovered near Westbury and economic growth began to take off; businesses such as breweries (beginning with Canandaigua Brewery) sprang up along with millspares (a type of fabric made from twisted silk thread). The influx of workers led to social unrest beginning around 1870; residents banded together to protest various measures taken by their government including increasing taxes on business owners while neglecting poverty- stricken rural areas outside of town. This culminated with a series of peaceful protests culminating with a local general strike against union busting conducted by local farmers early in 1880; this ultimately failed when military reinforcements arrived and suppressed the uprising without bloodshed. It is the only full-time incorporated town in Ulster County and is part of the Rochester–Staten Island Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now Westbury was on the east side of present-day Interstate 83 between milepost 6 and milepost 7, about one mile north of where it meets the Watervliet River. A post office called "Westerbury" was established in 1827, and remained in operation until 1892. The first settler to homestead in what became Westbury was Eli Whitney; he platted a township on July 12, 1840 from sections 5 and 6 of Carrickfergus (now North carrickfergus), using his personal funds followed by those of his father-in-law John Bradstreet. Wappingers Falls Road leads southeast from Westerbury through Wappingers Lake to Eastontown Center near today's intersection with Delaware Avenue east of I-83 south of Rochester. In 1847 Isaac Morse founded a gristmill at present day Morse Pond Road northeast of Westerbury along Witham Creek which served as an early community center for residents around that time; it closed by 1902 when railroad tracks were built right through its grounds. Morse also donated land to become Western Park west of Westerbury leading up topresent day Elmira Road/Route 9A (Nassau Veterans Memorial Highway). According to one source, as late as 1908 there were still more than 100 residences in Westerbury Township although most had been replaced by frame houses since then due to encroachment from farming families onto neighboring lots. In 1907 developers Charles Fenton and George Weisman built Fair Haven Farms on tracts they acquired including much of what presently forms eastern wooded acres located just outside modern day Westbury village limits - this parcel became known as "Fenton’s Swamp".
