Westbury is a small town in Rensselaer County, New York. The population was 2,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rochester-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. Westbury is located on the west bank of the Niagara River, about 12 miles north of Rochester and 11 miles south of Niagara Falls. The first permanent settler in what would become Westbury was Nicholas Rotella in 1784. He married Abigail Ayer and had one child, Nicholas Rotella Jr.. In 1824, John Davenport bought land east of present-day Westbury from Nicholas Rotella for $4 per acre. Davenport named his new settlement after himself, "Davenport's Landing". In 1828, John Wingate opened a general store at what is now known as Main Street near the intersection with Water Street. Wingate became an early investor in real estate and businesses in the area including a gristmill and sawmill on East Main Street which he continued to operate until his death in 1857. In 1830, he built a house on present day South Main Street which still stands today as a museum property belonging to local history buffs since it has been extensively restored by them over time. The wingate house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978). On July 8, 1841 Buffalo Bill Cody arrived at Davenport's Landing from his ill-fated attempt across Lake Ontario trying to find anti-Nebraska resistance leader Major James Fenton (later General Ulysses S Grant) an Indian fighter who had helped Cody during that same year's Buffalo Bill Roundup Parade led by Buffalo Bill through Rensselaer County on horseback - an event Cody considered both an adventure and humiliation for Nebraska Territory much like American Indians did not consider white men their equals despite having lived among them for centuries prior! Westbury is a small town in upstate New York, about 20 miles southeast of Syracuse. The population was 7,857 at the 2010 census. Westbury is one of the most rural communities in Upstate New York and has been nicknamed "The Village of the Pines." The first people to live here were the Mohawk tribe, who had a hunting and fishing camp on an upland near by. A post office was established in 1810, and the town name was derived from a Native American word meaning "from where the trees stand." In 1824, General James Wilkinson arrived with his army during the War of 1812 and platted what is now known as Westbury Heights on land that he had acquired from the Mischief Manhatten Indians. This marked one of the first times that towns were platted outside of central Syracuse. In 1827, George Washington Potter bought 1/4 mile (0.6 km) of what would become Route 9A from Captain John Remsen for $450. Potter developed this land into what is today known as Westbury Heights Park. One year later, he donated another tract to make up present-day Route 9A which runs along his original donation plus two others totaling . He also donated several lots within present-day Westbury to establish streets and parkland around his home. The village began To form when ministers representing Congregationalist churches meeting at his house dedicated a schoolhouse on May 12th 1865 - this event helped spark development around present day Main Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue southward - becoming what we know today as downtown W Ferryay The village continued to grow with new housing being erected until it reached its current size in 1870 when Dutch Immigrants started arriving bringing their sugar cane plantations with them - soon enough these plantations led to increased traffic demand which caused significant limb damage due to wild boars raiding crops close by; resulting in many homes either needing replacement or demolition over time
