The Coast Guard has been in White Plains, New York since 1892. The first post was established at the foot of the cliffs near Fort Wadsworth. In 1915, a new station was built on Long Island Sound to provide security for the Torbay Islands and their residents. In 1924, the Coast Guard acquired its present-day base at Westchester County Airport in White Plains. In 1943, the Coast Guard purchased an old military airfield in White Plains from General Electric Company and turned it into an airbase known as "New York Air National Guard Base". Brigadier General John L. Deutch became Commandant of the CGNY Air National Guard Base on September 1, 1945 and it continued to be used by United States Army units until November 9th, 1951 when CGNY AFB was closed down due to budget cuts.
White Plains is a small town located in westchester county, New York, United States. The population was 9,871 at the 2010 census. It is the largest community in Westchester County and the second-largest community in New York State after Manhattan. The first known inhabitants of what is now White Plains were Lenape Indians. In 1624, English colonists founded a small trading post on the east side of the Hudson River called Stamford (now White Plains). The original name of White Plains was spelled "West Hamlet." A year later, Stamford's new owner petitioned for a change to become "White Plains" because he thought people would be more likely to refer to his new town as that instead of Stamford. The petition was granted and the townspeople changed their name to White Plains on April 15, 1701. In 1836, part of what is now White Plains became part of the newly formed Town of Westchester. Prior to this time much of western western New York had been unincorporated land subject only to local taxation and decision by elected officials within each township or village. In 1836, Westchester County was created from portions of five other counties and included most of what are now White Plains as well as many other villages and townships. At its creation, Westchester County contained over 120 municipalities including 11 towns with a total population over 10,000 residents: Monmouth Junction (9th), Rye (10th), Oneonta (11th), Ossining (12th), Valhalla (13th), Valhalla Heights (14th), Yonkers (/ˈyɛnkəs/ (), Elizabethtown (/ˈeɪliptwᵉt/,1838; /ˈwuːrləks/, 1847) , Farmingdale (/ˈfærkingdane/ (), North Tonkin Township (/ˈnuh tsoʊnipt/) ), Hawthorne (/hɑθ ʃalpʃᵬndan/,1851)), Freshwater Cove (/fuʊrekweaver/) ). However, over time, the Coast Guard developed its own capabilities and became an essential part of American security. Today, the Coast Guard plays an important role in protecting our coastline and ports from enemy threats as well as responding to emergencies such as hurricanes and earthquakes. White Plains, New York is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 77,663 at the 2010 census. It is the fourth-largest town in New York State and one of the five towns in the county. White Plains is part of the New York–Newark–Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in White Plains was Nicholas de Balthazar who arrived on May 24, 1688. He named his new land "Dutchess" after Queen Elizabeth I of England's daughter by her first husband King James II of Scotland. The name "White Plains" was applied to this area when English merchants established a toll road through what are now central and northern White Plains on November 17, 1795. This route ran from Auburn, NY to Paterson and then downriver to White Plains Crossing where it connected with Horse Ferry Road leading northwest to Newark Liberty Airport. In 1814, John Cranch purchased 640 acres (247 ha) around present day Poughkeepsie from Nicholas de Balthazar for $8 per acre ($ today). Cranch farmed this land until his death in 1826 when it passed into trust for his four daughters and their husbands who continue to farm it today as part of the Cranch family tradition. The original millrace that coursed through much of present day White Plains runs still within walking distance from most homes today; evidence of this watermill's importance can be found throughout the town center including white stone markers marking former waterways along Main Street (now called Route 8). In 1820 Samuel Morse founded Western Union Telegraph Company here at Poughkeepsie Falls which soon became one of largest wire companies in America(). In 1865 Major General George Armstrong Custer fought his last battle here during Indian Wars campaign against Apaches nearpresent day Westchester County line north of Haverstraw Lake before being killed offrange at Reno National Cemetery west of Buffalo Junction (). Custer's remains were interred here beside those of many other American veterans eastward across state lines during these wars until posthumous repatriation began in 1923 following American entry into World War II . As recently as 1955 Whitespoken native Philistine actress Norma Shearer performed an acclaimed performance as Lady Macbeth opposite British star Kenneth Branagh at Yankee Stadium between Yankees games taking place just outside Green-Wood Cemetery () adjacent to current site occupied by Ulysses S Grant Presidential Library
The first European to sight the area now known as White Plains was Giovanni da Verrazzano, a Venetian explorer in 1524. He named the land "New York" after Saint Nicholas of Tolentino, who had been shipwrecked there in 1494. The first permanent European settlement was founded by Dutch colonists in 1624, and the name was anglicized to New York City in 1785. During the American Revolution, White Plains served as a staging ground for Battle of Long Island and Third Corps engagement at Saratoga Springs on September 19th, 1777. The town also played an important role in the Battle of Princeton on April 6th, 1814. In 1845 White Plains became part of the newly created Town of Westchester County.
