White Plains is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 25,471 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Westchester County. The name "White Plains" originated from the Dutch word Hollandsche plaats (place of Holland), which means "plain." The first European tosight White Plains was by Captain John Smith on July 14, 1624 while he and his men were exploring what is now Albany, New York. He named it after the town of Antwerp in Belgium where he had been before his explorations began. On November 20, 1626, General George Washington and his army landed at White Plains on Long Island for their invasion of New Netherland. They camped near what is now East Meadow during their march northward through Hudson Valley to Staten Island On October 9, 1714 Governor William Tryon erected a stone milestone at White Plains as part of an effort to improve navigation on the northern border of Westchester County between Long Island Sound and Staten Island Sound. The milestone still stands today next to the present day Town Hall building in downtown White Plains. In 1715-1716 Lieutenant Colonel James Clinton built Fort Clinton here as part of an effort to fortify what was then called Utica Township in preparation for war with Great Britain over control of Manhattan territory east of Amsterdam Bay which included Brooklyn Heights and Lower Manhattan including Chinatown In 1776 Major General Israel Putnam's brigade marched into Battle Creek valley against numerically superior British forces under Colonel Patrick Ferguson who retreated back up battle creek valley towards Peekskill After years of skirmishes along that line various villages located aroundbattle Creek valley developed names such as: Voorheesville (now Amherst), Oxford (now Wellesley), Haverhill (now North Haverhill), Dunstable(now Hadley). One interpretation suggests these village names may have derived from Indian words meaning "hollow" or "valley". Another possibility suggests these suffixes -ville -bury reflect early English Settler pronunciation patterns similar to those found in contemporary towns like Williamsburgh and Bedford Village in Massachusetts
