They named it "Nieuw-Amsterdam" (New Amsterdam). In 1686, English settlers founded White Plains as a trading post on the border of what are now Queens and Manhattan counties. In 1764, General George Washington's army passed through White Plains on their way to battle against the British at Saratoga Springs. In 1814, when President James Ketchum issued an executive order that all Native Americans be removed from western New York under military occupation until such time as they submitted to American jurisdiction – including the Iroquois nations – White Plains became part of Auburn Township and remained so until 1880 when it became its own borough. On July 24th 1870 voters approved incorporation into city limits by referendum with a population of 725; however this ordinance only applied to Auburn Borough and not to White Plains proper where the population had exceeded 1000 by 1871. When White Plains annexed Auburn Township in 1980 it also annexed most of Northvale (a suburb east of town), providing for its current total population of 20,402 residents who live primarily within its borders: northbound Route 9W between Prospect Avenue and Elmhurst Avenue (northwest corner), southbound Route 9W between Peachtree Street and Roosevelt Boulevard (southwest corner), eastbound I-287 exit 6B off Broadway/I-287 southbound lanes (Eighth Street/Broadway Alley) between Park Avenue and Montgomery Road/Route 9W – making up what is now known as "the inner ring".
