Yonkers is one of the most populous and economically vibrant cities in Upstate New York. The name for Yonkers originated from the word "yonder," meaning "to the east." The first settler in what would become Yonkers was Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1795. He and his wife had three children: Nicholas (1801-1872), Catharine (1804-1892), and John Nicoll Conte (1799-1857). In 1814, John Nicoll Conte married Anna Maria Sweeny. They had six children: Catharine (b. 1816), John Nicoll Jr., Nicholas (b. 1820), Sarah Jane (b. 1824), George Washington Conte II(b. 1830?), and Alcide Decatur Sweeny(b. 1840?).
