The Albemarle Air Force Base is home to the 4th Fighter Wing, which has a history dating back to World War II. The wing's first incarnation was as the 9th Pursuit Group, activated in December 1942 at RAF Bentwaters. The group was redesignated the 1st Fighter Squadron on 5 May 1943 and Battle of Britain veterans from the United StatesAAF were assigned to it. On 15 October 1943, the squadron became operational with F-4C Phantom fighters. Inactivated on 11 November 1945. In 1949, Spc. Don Armstrong assumed command of 1st FG until his promotion to Lt Col in 1951 and then 2nd FG until he assumed command of 3rd FG on 10 June 1953 before being promoted to Maj general on 1 July 1955. Brigadier General Armstrong commanded all three fighter wings during the Korean War (1950-1953). He also served as Commander Ninth Air Force during Operation Northwind (27 September 1952 – 8 October 1953). After his retirement from active duty in 1957 he joined Textron Aircraft & Aerospace Corporation where he worked for 37 years until his death in 1984. Albemarle, North Carolina is a small town located in eastern North Carolina. It was founded in 1728 by Captain John Smith and his men after they discovered the Catawba River. Albemarle is named for Colonel James Albemarle, who served as Governor of Virginia from 1758 to 1760. The town has a population of about 10,000 people and is the county seat of Beaufort County. Albemarle was settled on land that had been part of the Cherokee Nation before it was surrendered to the United States in 1802. In 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee decided to abandon Richmond, Virginia and move his army northeastward towards Raleigh-Durham with the hope of reaching New York City before winter set in. He ordered General George Thomas to march eastward towards Albemarle with orders to capture any Union forces that might be present. On July 2nd, 1861, General Thomas' brigade encountered Confederate cavalry southwest of Albemarle while maneuvering for an attack against a Union position on Bridgeport Hill near Winton Road. Thecombat resulted in one death and five wounded soldiers; however, the Confederates continued their pursuit without success. In 1865, Albemarle became the site of a battle between Union troops commanded by Major-General Nathan Bedford Forrest and Confederate general Jubal Early when Early's force attempted to storm Fort Harnett during what would become known as "The Battle of Fort Harnett". Overall, Forrest's unit lost about seventy-five men killed or mortally wounded while Early's force lost only two officers and twenty enlisted men killed or dying from wounds (including three generals).
