Albemarle is a small town in North Carolina. It is located in the Granville County seat of Sanford. The population was 2,853 at the 2000 census. The first people to live in Albemarle were the Algonquian-speaking Cherokee. In 1792, General James Moores and his army seized Albemarle from its Cherokee owners and made it a part of the new United States of America. The town began growing quickly, thanks to its location on the main road between Raleigh and Charlotte. By 1851, Albemarle had a population of over 1,200. During World War II, Albemarle played an important role in the war effort as both a manufacturing center for munitions production and as a training ground for soldiers from other parts of the country. Afterward, Albemarle experienced several decades of decline until it regained some popularity in recent years due to its natural resources (especially coal) and history.

Albemarle is a town in Orange County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greensboro-High Point Metropolitan Statistical Area. Albemarle was founded in 1795 by Revolutionary War veteran John Albertson. The town's first post office was established in 1814. In 1828, Albemarle became the capital of Orange County and it has been its only city since that time. The townsite that now contains Albemarle was originally inhabited by the Cherokee Nation after they were forced to cede their land to British colonists in 1784 during the American Revolution. After Creek Indians also lost their land to white America during this time, they moved into what is now Albemarle and began squatting on some of the earlier Cherokee Nation lands. In 1795, when Captain John Albertson arrived in North Carolina as a soldier for General Gates during the American Revolution and discovered this area, he decided to settle here with his family and start a new life as a farmer. He named his new community "Albemarle" after himself and his home state of Virginia (then called Westmoreland). Captain Albertson's original store opened on May 3rd, 1800 inside what is now known as Fifth Street Baptist Church; it remained open until 1895 when it burned down due to an electrical fire caused by lightning! His son-in-law built the present day courthouse which still stands today; it first opened its doors on December 15th, 1830! The current courthouse building replaced an older structure that served as both a jail and courthouse from 1838 until 1902! Today's museum located inside provides interesting insights into local history including things like Local Hero: Captain John Albertson who Settled Albemarles - A History lesson about how one man's success helped shape future development in North Carolina! In 1828, Governor Tryon appointed Colonel Alexander McDowell as commander of troops stationed at Fort Niagara to quell Indian uprisings throughout New York State following Queen Charlotte's recent proclamation calling for all Native Americans living within her borders to come together or face force if needed. McDowell successfully suppressed these protests and ordered all Indian residents living east of Georgetown Road (today's Uptown) between Kingston Road and Cherry Hill Road westward along those roads themselves packing their belongings onto wagons then drove them out into defiance through military operations known as "the expulsion." This action came days after General Andrew Johnson had issued an executive order prohibiting any more such operations without written consent from certain Tribal leaders deemed too powerful for government control! This particular operation attracted much attention from President James Kensey who responded with orders ordering Major General Thomas Gist to march his regiment northward along Kingston Road cutoff intersection toward Cherry Hill Road whereupon militia forces led by Lieutenant Colonel Edward Johnston would repel any attempt by McIntosh's Creekside Rangers or other natives attempting to cross over into Yankees territory uninvited! This event later came be dubbed 'The Battle Of Georgetown' because so many people died involved including 8 men from Gist’s regiment killed outright plus 10 others wounded before finally withdrawing back towards fortifications at nightfall!. colonelAlexander McDowell remains one of only two members of George Washington’s army buried outside Washington D.C., interred at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors!!!

In 1825, Albemarle became a state within the United States after it was formed from parts of both North Carolina and South Carolina. It is now one of the 25 U.S. states that has not seceded from the United States since 1861.
