Apex – located just north of Charlotte – has long been home to an army garrisoning unit known as 1st Infantry Regiment (Norman). Thisunit dates back to 1823 when it was donated by General James Moore Wardrop, who served as Commandant at Fort Sumter duringthe American Revolution.
