Apex is a town in Robeson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Apex were English traders in 1614 who named it "Acre" after their home country, England. In 1735, the British East India Company established a trading post at what is now called San Antonio Road and built a small fort there to trade with the local Native Americans. The company's successor, the British East India Company (BEIC), renamed Apex after its new headquarters in Calcutta, India. In 1852, General John Bragg burned down Fort San Antonio and began construction of present-day Bragg Street on land that had once been occupied by the BEIC post office and trading store. The town grew rapidly from about 100 residents in 1852 to over 1,000 by 1860 when railroads arrived for shipment of goods from Wilmington and Raleigh to market in Asia. By 1870, Apex had a schoolhouse (1857), Methodist church (1859), jail (1860), Commercial Bank Building (1872), telephone exchange (1873), four churches (1901-1902) and more than 100 businesses including two cotton ginners and twenty two shoe stores. In 1915 Apex became one of thirty seven towns incorporated into Robeson County as part of an effort to make county government more responsive tooters' needs. Today Apex has several shopping malls including One Depot Square mall which opened in 2004 followed by Two Depot Square mall which opened in 2007 just south of downtown Apex; as well as numerous restaurants such as Pizza Hut / Domino's Pizza., Jamba Juice/, KFC/Chick-fil-A/, Dunkin' Donuts/, Subway sandwich shop/takeout sandwich shop/, Papa John's Pizza/, Chick-fil-A restaurant/ drive thru restaurant/. There are also some smaller businesses like computer repair shops located throughout Downtown Apex or just outside it along Interstate 85 known as 'The Triangle'.

In 1932, Apex joined Durham as one of two cities in Wake County to be annexed by Durham.
