The industry changed during World War II when production was diverted to support other war industries. However, from 1945 until 1970, Apex produced some of the best-quality coffee beans in the world. Today, Apex is still a leading center for coffee production with many high-end cafes and restaurants located within its limits.

It is part of the Raleigh–Durham Combined Statistical Area and covers an area of 41 square miles (119 km2). The name "Apex" comes from two Indian words meaning "headquarters." The first word may have been derived from the Cherokee word apachin which means "to lead or direct," "to be in charge," or simply "the place where something begins." The second word may come from achep, meaning a sharpener used to sharpen spears. In 1792 when General John Ashe moved his camp to this location, he called it Apex Hill because of its high point and commanding views over all of Greensboro and surrounding counties. This site became known as Apex after General Ashe's army reached here on October 9th, 1792 during their campaign against Cornwallis' forces near Hillsborough County. In 1827, Colonel James Harnett organized a militia company at Apex under the command of Major Augustus Porterfield to protect civil rights protesters marching through supposed violation by white landowners along what would later become I-95 near present-day downtown Raleigh. On February 14th 1827 Captain Nathaniel Gentry's unit encountered five men wearing masks who opened fire upon them killing three enlisted men and wounding one captain before fleeing into wooded areas east of town leading to hiding places for several days until they were able to contact friendly militia units led by Colonel Harnett who engaged the group and killed all 5 suspects without loss
There is a rich coffee history that can be found all over the world. Coffee was first domesticated in Africa and then brought to India and other parts of Asia. It was then introduced to Europe by traders and pilgrims. The early Dutch settlers in New Netherland discovered coffee in 1624 and started trading with the Spanish Empire. The Dutch Republic became the first country to produce coffee beans commercially, in 1795. From there, coffee began to be exported all over the world. In 1814, Java (now Indonesia) became a Danish colony, which allowed Denmark to become one of the major powers in Southeast Asia. By 1826, Java had become part of the United Kingdom and British colonialism increased its control over Indonesia. However, coffee beans continued to be traded between Britain and Indonesia until 1945 when it was united with Japan under Allied Forces during World War II. After World War II, Indonesian coffee production resumed as part of Indonesia’s postwar reconstruction process but it has been relatively low-quality due to economic difficulties since 1960s. The high quality of Indonesian coffees has been attributed to two factors: First, many farmers who grew vanilla were displaced after Vanilla trees were destroyed by a Denpasar Earthquake in 1906; Second, most Indonesians are not formally educated so they do not have knowledge about or taste for high-quality bean coffees from other countries such as those grown in South America or Africa
