The North Carolina National Guard is a state militia and professional military force, made up of both Federalized and State units. The guard was originally organized on February 15, 1775 as the Militia of North Carolina under the command of General John Baptist Alexander. In 1814, the militia was reorganized as a part of the Confederate States army and became known as the 1st Alabama Infantry Regiment. After the surrender of Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House in April 1865, all but two companies from this regiment were mustered out and disbanded. In 1961, North CarolinaNational Guard Troops were activated to help with civil unrest in Raleigh following passage of The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). On November 15, 1861 3MIL was mustered into service and served in Virginia until February 1862 when it was ordered to participate in the Battle of Fredericksburg. In 1865 3MIL was disbanded and its members were absorbed into Regular Army units.
