The North Carolina Naval Militia is one of the many naval militias in the United States. The militia traces its roots back to 1775 and was first organized as a coastal defense force. As the Revolutionary War progressed, the navy became an important part of American strategy and, eventually, the militia was formed as a national guard. In 1812, during the War of 1812, Confederate forces attacked American ships off Cape Hatteras and destroyed several vessels. This attack led to a militarization of coastal towns in North Carolina which had been largely peaceful until then. The new militias were used forborder patrols and it wasn't until 1898 that they were turned into full-time military units with their own commanders. In 1938, during World War II, NCNMC joined other state militaries in forming Task Force 151 which patrolled along the Atlantic coast looking for submarines seeking refuge inside America. The task force was disbanded in 1945 but has been resurrected multiple times since then as various branches of government have called upon it (e.g., Homeland Security). In 1971, NCNMC became affiliate member organization with United States Coast Guard Auxiliary-Atlantic Area (USCG AO-1) under command of CG Coastal Command at NAS Fort Worth Texas. CG AO-1 assumed responsibility for all navies within CG Atlantic Area including NCNMC whilestill maintaining individual liaison with each navy through monthly Submarine Wing Group meetings/forums NCNMC also participates fully in Joint Service amphibious warfare exercises annually

Apex, North Carolina is a town in Chatham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,362 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. The downtown core of Apex is an old mill town with Federal style architecture dating back to 1868 and now home to many shops and restaurants as well as the local library and gallery district. The milltown has also been called "The Athens of the South" for its cultural significance. Apex's rich history began with the founding of Apex by James Wofford on December 2, 1795. Wofford was a surveyor who surveyed much of what is now Chatham County, including present-day Apex. He named his new community after Mount Olympus in Greece because he thought it would be an excellent place to find timber while surveying through that country. In 1868, John Hargrave bought land in Apex from James Wofford for $2 per acre (1/4 mile²). Hargrave built a large cotton gin on his land which still stands today - one of only two gins in the state at that time! Hargrave became one of the most influential people in both Chatham County and North Carolina during his time here. He donated many acres of land to various churches and other charitable organizations throughout his life – something that continues to this day! He also helped fund numerous agricultural projects around central Chatham County which have had a significant impact on contemporary culture and agriculture in general. One such project was the construction of roads and bridges across Catawba River which facilitated increased trade between central NC and southeastern SC during Reconstruction period (1865-1877).
