Asheboro is located on the eastern edge of the Piedmont region of North Carolina, bordered by Johnston and Randolph counties to the north and east, and Bladen and Brunswick counties to the south. To its west lies Catawba County. According to the United States Census Bureau, Asheboro has a total area of , all land. The history of Asheboro began with two small settlements: White's Ferry on Tryon Creek in 1817 and then known as "Cabarrus" in 1821. When white men first came to this area they named it for General John Custer who had recently been killed during an Indian battle near present-day Fort Worth, Texas (now Dallas). The first post office was established in 1824 at what is now called Union Station Road and served as part of Johnston County until 1830 when it was moved to Asheboro where it continued under that name until 1906 when it became known as "Cabarrus". In 1886, a train depot was built at what is now called Church Street which served as both the county seat and primary commercial center for both Cabarrus County and Ashley Township until 1909 when that depot burned down. In 1902/3 a new courthouse was constructed on present day Main Street which replaced an earlier courthouse erected around 1800 by Captain Samuel Lovejoy which had been destroyed by fire while being used as a jail (Lovejoy may have been partially responsible for saving many lives when he allowed inmates access to firewood).
