The first post office in Asheboro was established on January 1, 1824. The name "Asheboro" was given to the town by General James Fayette Hill after he defeated an Indian force at Battle of Horseshoe Bend on December 11, 1825. For many years, Asheboro functioned as a transportation hub for farmers and other residents travelling between Asheville and surrounding counties. In 1894, construction began on what would become known as the Cumberland Gap Railway which connected Asheboro with Greensboro and Raleigh/Durham. This railway served as a key factor in providing access to new markets for businesses in Asheboro and other rural areas around Buncombe County. In 1925, Mayor Smedley Butler announced plans to build a new courthouse in downtown Asheboro that would replace the aging Courthouse Annex located across Main Street from City Hall). Construction commenced on this project in 1926 and finished two years later – just before World War II forced major changes to local government structures within North Carolina. At this time, downtown Asheboro consisted of only three buildings: City Hall (the original structure), Court House Annex (which had been used since 1926) and Mayor Butler's Office Building (built shortly after mayor Butler's arrival). During World War II, downtown Asheboro became one of several cities aware of their potential role as military targets due to its strategic location along Interstate 74W – close to both Wilmington and Durham airports. Although there were no reported attacks against either city during wartime,[citation needed], citizens remain fearful of potential futureTerrorist threats never materializing.[1] However, despite these fears, business continuedOperating vigorously throughout most of the war years[2][3]. In 1945 following victory over Japan at Okinawa Campaign,[4], Downtown Asheborne experienceda surgein tourism which continues today thanks primarilyto its rich history dating back to more than 200 years ago!
