Asheboro, North Carolina is a town in Granville County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 7,853 at the 2010 census. The Reformed Church of America's Asheboro Bible College is located in the town. The first settlers to Asheboro were Edwin and Deborah (Haley) Smith who arrived in 1767. They named their home "Asheboro" after nearby Asheborough, England. In 1837, John Witherspoon settled on what is now the south side of Main Street in Asheboro and began to grow corn and soybeans for export. He also ran a store and post office there until his death in 1868. In 1881, George Hargrave built a flour mill on Elk Creek which became one of the largest flour mills in the country. It operated until 1906 when it was sold to J P Latham & Company of Manchester Tennessean newspaper industry giant J P Latham had been interested in acquiring it since its founding as an independent paper company in 1896. The mill continued operating as an agricultural implement manufacturing business until 1970 when it was acquired by Laird Milling Co., Incorporated d/b/a Millsaps Industries which continues to operate it today under the name Laird Milling Company LLC-. In 1907-1908, Ashtone High School opened with grades 9-12; however high school enrollment increased rapidly enough that requests for space grew increasingly limited so school trustees decided to open a branch high school adjacent to their original elementary schools where students would be able to continue attending while they completed grade 8 through 12 education; this new high school building still stands today on Elm Street across from downtown Asheboro serving as both Ashtone Middle School and Ashley Elementary School for residents of east central Granville County including parts of north central Buncombe County up until recent years when those students have transferred into Asheville Central Technical High School located just outside downtown Asheville having access from I-40 Exit 257). In 1935 Dr James Beard Henderson donated land along Elk Creek for use as a college campus Teachers College Appalachian State Teachers College opened its doors August 15th 1935 enrolling ninety nine teachers with plane tickets from all over America . A Brief History of Asheboro, North Carolina Asheboro is a town in Wilkes County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2000 census. As of the 2010 census it had increased to 2,016. Asheboro is located on the Southern edge of Charlotte metropolitan area. It is part of the Research Triangle Park region. The first permanent residents in what would become Asheboro were three white men from South Carolina who arrived in 1794 and named their land "Asheboro" for General James Robertson's Creek Massacre where many black Americans were killed by whites during the early 1800s as a reprisal for slave revolts. In 1814-1815 Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell raided western NC and captured large numbers of women and children as well as artillery and supplies leaving behind a 320 mile long trail of destruction dubbed "the Trail of Tears." This event left an indelible imprint on Asheboro with its nickname "The Meadows". In 1839-1840 John Capps (a native son) bought 640 acres near modern day Asheboro from Hugh Lawson Johnston (a Cherokee) for $2 per acre. He began developing this land into what is now known as Capps Hill which he named after his father-in-law, Colonel John Capps Sr., also from South Carolina who had died in 1836 while serving with Ulysses S Grant's army during the American Civil War. In 1860 when North Carolina became a state, Asheboro was incorporated as a town with 496 residents including free blacks living on credit or through familial relationships to white farmers until 1865 when they were emancipated; however they continued to live within walking distance of their homes until after World War II when some African Americans moved out because apartheid segregation laws prevented them from living close to white people again without fear of retribution or economic discrimination
Asheboro is the largest city in North Carolina and the county seat of Ashe County. The city was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1859, and became a permanent resident in 1865. It grew rapidly during the late 19th century as a result of its location on the railroad network and its position as an agricultural center. Asheboro experienced a decline during World War II due to the proximity of military bases and manufacturing plants, but has since regained its former prominence as a cultural and economic center.
