It is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. In 1729, General James Fenimore Cooper settled in this area as an American Revolutionary War officer and landholder; he later became a state legislator and U.S. senator from New York City. In 1835, Asheboro was incorporated as a town under the name "Asheboro" by ordinance of the Wake County Board of Commissioners; however, it reverted to its original name after citizens petitioned for it to be changed back to "San Felipe de Jesús."
