When Asheville, North Carolina was first settled in the late 17th century, coffee was a rarity. The area had been inhabited by the Cherokee for centuries and grew rich from their trade with Spanish settlements in Florida and Mexico. But it wasn't until 1696 that coffee beans began to be traded between English settlers and the Cherokee. At first, colonists used Indian corn instead of coffee beans because Native Americans were not familiar with them. However, as European settlers became more established in the area and began trading with other nations, they realized that coffee would make an excellent export commodity. So, in 1797, a group of Englishmen set out to find and purchase bean fields on which to grow coffee. They reached Charlotte County by way of what is now Durham County on November 12th. The Englishmen were quickly impressed by the quality of the coffee beans they encountered here. In fact, some of them even went so far as to name their new settlement after one of these valuable commodities – Clinton Coffee House (now known as Gastonia Coffee House). And so it began: The growth of this industry in Asheville would lead to its eventual popularity throughout North America – something that continues today!

The Cherokee Indians were the first permanent European settlers in what would become Asheville with Colony established by Sir Walter Raleigh on July 12, 1584. The area that now makes up downtown Asheville was already inhabited by various cultures before white settlement began to take root here in 1736 when General James Moore founded Fort Dobbs on Roanoke Island as part of his effort to trade with Native Americans and determine their location between Cherokee Nation to the east and Spanish Florida to the west. In 1828, following Indian Removal Order No. 9 issued by President Andrew Johnson, much of what stands today within downtown Asheville was taken over by Civil War soldiers and residents who had evacuated during Catawba County's attempt at seceding from North Carolina during this time period; however much remained intact until 1871 when downtown became part of new Durham City following Durham's incorporation into Raleigh proper as Wake County pursuant to an act passed by the General Assembly which merged Durham and Wake Counties on January 1st, 1871 During Reconstruction – which followed America's reconstruction after its Civil War – many aspects of life here were changed anew: African Americans began working actively side-by-side with whites starting out as sharecroppers until they finally achieved full civil rights beginning around 1930; while Educational opportunities improved for both black students and white students alike through institutions such as Duke University (then known as Pembroke College) which opened its doors in 1865; Skidmore College (founded 1888) also becoming one of America’s first coeducational universities; while job opportunities grew for menial labor until World War II provided some stability for businesses including two years worth$2 million earned from tobacco production alone under King George Tobacco Co.; prior to that it was mostly small businesses run mainly by women or family members until World War II ended those jobs because technological advances led American companies such as Ford Motor Company rapidly moving away from manufacturing altogether soon thereafter In short then there has always been something happening here - whether it be commerce or education or entertainment or political activism - creating an ever-changing stew pot where people have cooked up their own stories about who they are and why they live here This paper will focus specifically on history associated with Asheville but it should not be considered an exhaustive account since there are numerous other places throughout North Carolina that play significant roles in Appalachian culture and history
