The Burlington Air Force Base is home to the United States Air Force's 5th Bomb Wing. The wing has a long airforce history dating back to World War II. The base was opened in 1951 and became an air force station in 1961. From 1968-2004, the wing served as the host unit for Headquarters USAF/Air Combat Command (ACC) Tactical Operations Center (TOC). In 2004, ACC moved from Randolph AFB, Texas to Burlington AFB and the wing became responsible for all tactical operations under ACC. During World War II, Burlington AFB was one of three American bases housing RAF Fighter Command's fighter squadrons stationed in North America. Upon unification of the RAF in 1946, these squadrons were redesignated as United States Army Air Forces' Fifth Bomb Wing and assigned to Eighth Air Force at Burlington. In 1951, when Ninth Air Force was activated at Randolph AFB, USAF/ACC assumed responsibility for all strategic bomber forces located east of the Mississippi River including Burlington AFB which becoming subordinate to Ninth AF on 1 Jul '61'. On 2 Apr '68 Ninth AF relocated from Springfield Armory AB MO to Burlington AFB after being Wheels up at McGuire Airport NJ since Mar '67;becoming operational 3Apr 68 with our first Boeing 707 squadron 9E-5BN #8 Miami Intl Airways [AMI] flying out of here! After servein us thruout taproom firefights over Bataan Peninsula I moved on 1 Sep 69 t 8UFW [Attn: Commander Seventh AF—Major General Hap Arnold] who had it turn into full fledged real world military airport w/ F-14s outside & KC-135s streamin' fuel nnd tanker'd right past my window day n night! During my stay @Buford they installed new Hangar #2 aft main gate which also housed their Aircrew Processing Facility while we were using Main Gate#1 as their barracks until we got a new hangar that same year...In Jan 70 they began movin' all their equipment in Lots 10–15 across street from Main Gate while we were still using Gate#1 so that by Jun 70%of our total sqft went into Lot 10! By Dec 71 lot size had grown enough t Jan 72 they closed Gate#1 and opened Lot 11 after having spent $500K moving everything across street! The Burlington Air Force Base gift history began in 1946 when the United States Air Forces activated its first fighter squadron, The 1st Fighter Squadron, at Burlington. At that time, the base was located on Duck Island and housed a single hangar. The 1st Fighter Squadron operated Lockheed P-38 Lightning IIs from Burlington. In 1957, the wing's first jet squadron, The 2nd Fighter Squadron was activated at Burlington AFB and flew Lockheed RF-4 Phantom aircraft. In 1969, the wing's second jet squadron, The 3rd Fighter Squadron was activated and served as an air superiority force with North American F-111A/B aircraft. In 1982, the 3rd Fighter Squadron transitioned to McDonnell Douglas C-17 Globemaster III transports and continued serving as an airborne interdiction unit until 2006 when it was inactivated. The 4th Wing (Airlift) arrived at Burlington AFB in 2008 and serves as part of Air Combat Command’s Global Strike Command component responsible for providinglift capabilities to partner forces worldwide through cargo transportation operations including airlifting munitions to conflict zones. As one of USAF’s smallest wings with only 36 deployable airplanes available for deployment anywhere in the world this unit provides unique opportunities for gifts which are enjoyed by all those who wear our uniform!
Burlington, North Carolina is a town in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 8,898 at the 2010 census and has grown to over 11,000 since the 2000 census. The town is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. Burlington is known for its large variety of businesses and cultural attractions such as its art galleries and museums, as well as its annual farmer's market. The first inhabitants of what is now Burlington were farmers who grew corn and potatoes on their properties. In 1834, John Crouch founded a trading post near where modern-day Burlington stands. The post served as a port for goods transported by boat from Wilmington to Raleigh and then back again. In 1865, George Harnett built a gristmill on the site that still operates today. In 1892, Burlington became an incorporated municipality which later changed its name to Alamance County in honor of Count Gaston de la Mothe de Montresor (1752-1828). In 1900, Burlingtons population reached 10 residents; however this number slowly decreased throughout the next few decades due to technological advances which made farming more difficult and transportation expenses increasingly expensive. However during World War II Burlington experienced an increase in population with many people moving into the city to work in munitions plants or other military industries downtown. The A-10 is also known as “the aircraft that saves lives” due to its ability to hit targets at long range with pinpoint accuracy. Burlington, North Carolina is a town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,011 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. Burlington is located on the Yadkin River and has a total area of 11 square miles (27 km2). Burlington was founded in 1780 by Riordan McIntosh and his family as a small trading post on the Yadkin River. The first store in Burlington was built by McIntosh's grandson, James Caldwell McIntosh. Burlington became an agricultural center with large amounts of tobacco production beginning in the early 1800s. In 1876, John Capps purchased land northeast of Burlington from members of the McIntosh family and began developing it into what is now known as Raleigh-Durham Airport. Raleigh-Durham Airport was renamed George Washington National Airport in 1970. The economic boom that followed World War II led to increased construction activity throughout Burlington including several new downtown blocks and hundreds of housing units developments statewide. The success of these projects allowed for continued growth during the postwar years but did not last long after taxes became too high and demand for housing declined after returning to peacetime levels. This stagnation led to some tension between developers and residents overlarged new homes and tight zoning regulations which limited development potential; this tension culminated with a series of riots that rocked Burlington in 1981 following revelations that some developers had received kickbacks from city officials regarding zoning decisions made prior to that year's general election victory by then Mayor Jesse Helms
Burlington was founded in 1788 by General James Dobbin and his wife, Susanna. The town was named for Burlington County, New Jersey, where General Dobbin had been stationed during the American Revolution. The first post office in Burlington opened in 1789. In 1814, Burlington became a borough of Raleigh. It remained a borough until 1907.
