The original settlement of Burlington was established in 1760 by John and Martha Caldwell as a port on the Catawba River. From its inception it was an important transportation and trade center on the lower Yadkin River. Burlington became an incorporated town in 1872. It is located on the eastern edge of Butner County and has a land area of 21 square miles (54 km²).
