In 1845, Confederate forces invaded Union territory in North Carolina; this event led to a retaliatory attack on Union forces at Fort Fisher. As a result, the Army was called into action once more, this time helping to quell any remaining Confederate resistance within Carrboro itself. Today, the Army remains an essential part of life in Carrboro – both as a source of defense against potential harm or violence from external sources as well as providing support for local civic organizations and events throughout the year. Carrboro is a city in Chatham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 25,387 at the 2010 census. It is the town seat of Chatham County and home to both UNCC and Carrboro State University. The area that would become Carrboro was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in the early 1800s. In 1819, General John Custer led an American military campaign against Native Americans in what is now southeastern North Carolina. His unit, the 8th U.S. Infantry Regiment (Chapman’s Battalion), was stationed at what is now the Carrboro Pentagon on One Mile Road across from UNC Chapel Hill. When General Custer's regiment arrived in 1821, it soon began construction of a small fortification known as Fort Richardson on nearby Cobb Street just south of present-day Carrboro Boulevard (now Elizabeth Street). The fortifications were completed in 1825 and served as a barracks for Chatham County militiamen during America's Civil War (1861-1865). In 1835, Nashoba House – later renamed Pritchard House – became one of Carrboro's first buildings when it was purchased by Colonel James Pritchard from his daughter Lucy Pritchard for $4,000. For many years thereafter it served as the town hall and courthouse/ jail - all three being located on Tryon Avenue within walking distance of each other. In 1865–68 Confederate Major General Averill Harriman occupied Nashoba House while he prepared to move his army from Wilmington to Petersburg so that he could lead an attack upon Union forces at Petersburg Landing along the South River near wherepresent-day Chapel Hill stands today. When Confederate Major General Robert Ewell learned about this plan, he ordered Harriman to leave Nashoba House immediately before dawn on November 13th so that Union soldiers would not be able to identify him as one of their own when they reached Petersburg Landinguda few hours later! Pritchard's house continued serving as a town hall until 1974 when it burned down; however, it had been restored and reopened several times since then due its popularity among residents and tourists alike as a museum/ attraction showcasing local history and culture without having to go out of door! Today Pritchard House remains one of Carrboro's most popular attractions with over 2 million visitors annually! As time passed new towns were established around Raleigh including Hillsborough (later Durham), Cary (later Garner), Matthews (later Rocky Mount), Selma ( subsequently Montgomery ), Kingstown (later Orangeburg ), Lenoir City ( later New Bern ), Waxhaw Junction - which included parts of present day Hickory Ridge -and finally Chapel Hill proper - all surrounding Raleigh or larger regional cities or villages such as Hendersonville( founded 1763) Dobbin(founded 1785) Goldsborough(founded 1790) Ninety Sixmile Run(founded 1793) Swaintowne(founded1796) . . . only four original towns remain today within Chatham County: Carrboro Village (), Edenton (), Garner Unit ()and unincorporated community named after Drury Billington (). Outlying areas included Springdale(), Huntersville()and Lumberton()all located outside the limits defined by Chatham County government but still part of its jurisdiction
