The history of the National Guard in Cary, North Carolina dates back to 1861. When Confederate soldiers abandoned their posts along the Outer Banks of North Carolina, the state hastily organized a militia force to protect its citizens. The first militia unit was raised in Cary by Captain John W. Hogg and Lieutenant Edward Fenton on October 8, 1861. The unit was known as the 1st Regiment of North Carolina Volunteer Militia and served under Major General Richard Ewell until December 15, 1861 when he resigned due to ill health. In 1865, after Virginia seceded from the Union and began waging war against Jefferson Davis’s Confederacy, local farmers pooled their resources and formed a company of 1,500 men called the 12th Regiment ofNorth Carolina Volunteers (later redesignated as Company D). On February 26, 1866 these men were ordered to march south to Raleigh with orders to join Governor Andrew Johnson’s military force at Fort Sumter. Arriving too late for duty at Fort Sumter they marched back home instead and disbanded on May 10th. Today there are over 2,000 members of the National Guard in Cary including 350 companies that serve statewide in support of law enforcement activities such as Search and Rescue missions; traffic control; protection during events such as Memorial Day weekend; or response to natural disasters like floods or tornadoes. In addition to service within our own community we also participate in many homeland security exercises across the country which provides us with valuable experience and knowledge about how other countries operate their national guard units.

Cary is a city located in the federal district of North Carolina. It was founded in 1838 by Samuel Moore and is the second most populous city in North Carolina after Raleigh. Cary's population increased from 3,500 to 24,000 between 2000 and 2010. The City of Cary was created on April 1, 1996 from the merger of the two neighboring towns of Apex and Mission Woods. The name "Cary" comes from Indian Chief Carteret's claim to the area that became today's Cary County. The history of Cary can be traced back to 1838 when Samuel Moore settled in what is now downtown Cary with his family. From this spot he started farming and trading goods with local tribes for food, weapons, and other items needed for war against Native Americans. In 1865, his son-in-law James Buchanan Hodges built a log cabin on land purchased from the Cherokee Nation near present day mile marker 20 on I-85/I-485 which served as the nucleus for what would become known as Hodgesville. After years of development by developers such as Hodges, one surveyor incorrectly identified an intersection called "Wedge" (now corner lot 507), thinking it was part of their development plan for South Hill Village - an area that would eventually become downtown Raleigh. Hurricane Floyd damage in 1974 destroyed many homes and businesses within blocks of where Edgecombe Road meets I-85/I-485 making it difficult to continue developing South Hill Village so construction began on what would become downtown Cary soon after - Fortieth Street near present day mile marker 25 being its original location! Downtown Cary quickly became a vibrant center for commerce with several large stores including JBL Music Factory (now Sears) opening its doors in 1929 followed by JCPenney opening its doors in 1932 just before WWII! During World War II both Sears & JCPenney closed but reopened shortly thereafter due to wartime demand! Additionally there were numerous small businesses start up during this time including The Musicians Tavern which opened in 1951 serving buffalo chicken sandwiches until 1984; Second Chance Barber Shop which opened 1963; First Baptist Church which had been built earlier that year – becoming one of only two churches open at night then; Mitchell's Department Store first open 1966; The Gilded Cage Casino opened 1971 followed by One Queen Shopping Center 1975 before finally Macy's store opens inside Fortieth Street Plaza later renamed Macy's Corporate Center! A new era begins when Target opens its doors next door across street starting off as a small town shop! Downtown Cary quickly becomes one of America’s most vibrant cities thanks largely to its active business community who invested heavily in infrastructure projects like Highway 421/I-485 Wildcat Boulevard connecting downtown with outlying neighborhoods providing easy access to all types of shopping options! Today Downtown has over 100 retail shops along Interstate 85 / I-485 making it easily accessible and convenient for everyone living or visiting Cary!
The National Guard has a long and varied history. From its humble beginnings as a militia to the present day, the National Guard has been a vital part of America’s system of government. From its inception in 1792, the United States National Guard was made up of volunteers from all over the country. The first national guard unit was raised in Westchester County, New York, on October 14th, 1792. The unit was called “the 4th Regiment of Line Infantry” and consisted of men from Kingston and Old Bridge Township (now Westchester County). The Militia Act of 1795 created an army-like force that could be mobilized by state governors at any time for any purpose. This force became known as the National Guard Bureau or simply the Guards. The Guards were answerable only to state legislatures and not to Congress. This arrangement allowed for more innovation and creativity within the Guardsman corps than would have been possible if they had been under direct Congressional control. In 1802, an act was passed which increased funding for the Guardsmen and allowed them to field larger units instead of just two companies per regiment. This act also granted members lifetime membership in the Guardsmen Corps without having to re-apply every five years. These changes helped make the Guardsmen one of America’s most experienced military forces – able to fight in every major conflict since Confederation. During World War I, both American Expeditionary Forces (AEF)and French Army units were raised within the United States National Guard with no distinction between Regular Army or Marine Units! The AEF formed on April 20th 1918 while Marines formed on November 5th 1918! At this point confusion had arisen because there were no statutory provisions specifying how these divisions should be classed! As it transpired however, both AEF brigades were actually composed entirely (or almost entirely)of Citizen Soldier Massachusetts Volunteers who had volunteered their services! It is interesting to note that although Marines did eventually form part of American Expeditionary Force during World War II – their role was largely ceremonial; their actual combat service took place with France! In total 108000 Americans served in WWI including 66000 officers & enlisted men
