Cary is a city in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 44,542 at the 2010 census. Cary is the county seat of Durham County. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. The city has a rich history dating back to 1692 when Englishman James Forster purchased land here from the Lenape Native Americans and named it New York City after his homeland in Ireland. The town site was first inhabited by Scots-Irish farmers and their families who owned much of what are now Cary and other neighborhoods. The first post office in town was established on November 1, 1813. A millinery business led by Mrs. John Sweeny became one of the most successful in the community, with two stores and twenty employees, until it closed its doors for good in 1893 because of competition from larger mills near Elizabeth City (now Research Triangle Park). In 1835 an Act of Congress designated this tract as a rural township within Durham County; however, no action was taken to take effect until 1840 when a Second Act created agricultural districts throughout Durham County - Cary being one such district - creating farmland which could be leased or sold subject to taxation by landowners therein according to acreage rather than head count basis as had been customary up until that time. This act also provided for Town Meeting on an irregular basis (the first being held on May 14) to set forth local grievances and issues which needed resolution before they could be brought before Township trustees who were elected monthly at large meetings called "Fairs" during summer months followed by general sessions during wintermonths under the direction of Township Clerk Jno Hargrave who presided over all proceedings except for meeting minutes which were published annually and kept open to inspection by qualified citizens interested therein; township trustees were empowered “to lay out Streets” within their respective townships including but not limited to those between Elizabeth City limits and Carytown Limits without having any vote or consent thereof required from either party thereto... In 1869 Acting Governor David Wilkes appointed Elijah Hicks Chairman & Trustee Of The Board Of Selectmen With Power To Make All Judicial And Civil determinations In Respect To Roads And Water Works Within His District... By virtue Of His Office As Chairman & Trustee Elijah Hicks obtained From King George III A Grant For $2,500 Which He Paid Out In Shares To Each Settler Who Applied For It... Years later On October 22nd 1888 An Act received At Nc's Capitol authorized creation Of A Municipal Corporation Called “Cary Corp” Named After Mr Elijah Hicks President… This corporate charter granted all manner of powers And privileges enjoyed By Corporations At Large Including But Not LIMITED TO: Authorization To borrow money On Unsecured Bonds At Public Securities Pricesdevising Ways And MeansTo finance Certain ExpensesAnd making all special Laws Necessarily obtainable By Municipal Corporations Subject To gubernatorialapproval… Today we enjoy Many same rights Granted unto us Under Law By Our Corporate Charter ancestors More than 175 years ago! During World War I North Carolina produced some significant military hardware including tanks, planes, artillery pieces etc., many items that have become trademarks or copyrighted properties of their manufacturers today. One example is American Tank Company's tank destroyer M1A1 " experimental". Other companies that contributed significantly include Reynolds Arms Company (manufacturer/seller of 50 mm machineguns), Browning Machine Gun Company (manufacturer/seller 20 mm machineguns), American Telephone & Telegraph company (manufacturer/seller telephones), Bethlehem Steel Corporation (builder/builder armored vehicles) among others. Some examples are: Patton's US Sixth Army fought its way through Nazi Germany towards Berlin on April 19-20 1945 using Patton's Sherman tanks supported by Browning artillery piece(s) along with P-47 Thunderbolts flown overhead providing air cover; US Marines fighting ashore against Japanese forces at Leyte Gulf used GMC Higgins boats filled with supplies and ammunition while Navy ships bombarded shore positions; Allied troops liberated from Saddam Hussein's regime used C-130 Hercules transport planes ferrying soldiers into Kuwait
Cary, North Carolina is located in the eastern part of the United States and is bordered by Charlotte County to the south and east, Johnston County to the north, and Gaston County to the west. The city was founded on December 12, 1825 as a trading post between traders from Georgia and Virginia. Cary grew quickly due to its location on an important crossroads connecting several states. In 1852, Cary became a state capital when it was included within the new Confederacy. By 1870, Cary had more than 10,000 residents and was one of the largest cities in South Carolina. The city experienced significant economic growth during Reconstruction following the American Civil War. However, after Reconstruction ended in 1865, Cary's fortunes declined as manufacturing jobs left for newer towns in South Carolina or for other countries. In 1947, Cary became one of four UNC-Chapel Hill campuses along with Durham (North Carolina), Raleigh (North Carolina), and Chapel Hill (NC) that merged into University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
