Charlotte, North Carolina is a city in the state of North Carolina. The population was 505 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Mecklenburg County and one of the most populous cities in eastern North Carolina. Charlotte's history dates back to 1795, when it was founded as a trading post on the lower Yadkin River by Colonel James Moore and his wife Hannah. The city became an important stop along both the Underground Railroad and for its production of cotton goods. In 1849, Charlotte became part of Transylvania County, which included all of Mecklenburg County except for its eastern border with Davidson County. As a result, Charlotte grew slowly until its growth into a major metropolitan area began in the 1960s. Today, Charlotte is known for its music scene, art galleries, nightlife and professional sports teams including the Charlotte Hornets (ABA), while also being home to a number of colleges and universities such as Duke University, UNC Chapel Hill and Wake Forest University.
On October 25, 1755, during the French and Indian War, a group of British troops under General John Huss were ambushed by a large force of Cherokee warriors at the Battle of Cowpens. The British soldiers were able to fight off the Cherokee attackers but lost many men, including Lieutenant Colonel William Tryon. Tryon and his regiment then advanced on the Cherokee town of Garrisons to capture it and gain intelligence about their activities. While at Garrisons, Tryon met with Native American chiefs named Muscogee (the Creek) and Chickasaw. Upon meeting them, Tryon learned that they had been allied with France and desired to trade goods with Britain in order to alliances against Spain. tryon was also told that any British forces attempting to enter their territory would be killed without quarter. In response to this information, Tryon ordered his regiment's artillery fire onto the town from atop Fort McAllister in order to intimidate the Native Americans into surrendering. After several hours of heavy gunfire from both sides, no results were seen as either side began TO retreat back towards their respective villages while still carrying out some sort of trade or peace negotiations could not be reached between both parties despite repeated efforts by both commanders. As night fell over Garrisons, most of the garrison deserted ship in order continue fighting beside their English allies; only a handful remained behind determinedly defend what little home they had left before fleeing across hostile terrain into Spanish-held territory days later on October 29th after being driven off by superior Spanish forces at Palo Alto Hill near modern day Houston.
