Clayton is a town in the U.S. state of North Carolina, and the county seat of Robeson County. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Raleigh-Durham-Fayetteville metropolitan area, within the Durham–Chapel Hill Combined Statistical Area. The town began as a small settlement in 1799 on Catawba River land grant to John Clayton by Governor Bertie Atherton. The first store was built in 1802 and an academy (now University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) was founded in 1825 by Colonel James Ketchum and Dr. John Fenton. In 1853, it became one of five townships within Robeson County when it was split from Union Township. The courthouse moved to Claymont in 1906 and remains there today; most of the other buildings were replaced with more recent architecture during that time period or were destroyed by fire over time. Clayton has seen some growth since its incorporation as a town but its location within what is now known as Durham/Chapel Hill has always been its main lure for businesses and residents alike; many continue to call Claymont home despite having long distance access to larger towns such as Durham or Raleigh through Interstate 95 or I-40 respectively. One local business which still exists today is Heritage Hardware which opened their doors back in 1911 aftermoving from their original location just east of downtown Clayton into what is now their Generationnex Shopping Center; they are also still active with charitable giving activities including helping elderly individuals get groceries delivered right to their door!
