Clayton is a town in Forsyth County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Forsyth County. The name Clayton comes from two parts of the same pioneer family: one part came to this area in 1814 and another part arrived in 1835. The first mention of Clayton appeared on a map dated 1792. By 1800, there were three settlements in ClayTON- one by John Cline and his sons George and James Cline, the other two by William Caldwell and his son Richard Caldwell also known as "The Rich." In 1809-10 settlers including Joseph Cline moved from Fayetteville to what is now Clayton after finding land there for sale. In 1861, when Forsyth County was created from portions of Davidson County, Clayton became its capital. On December 12, 1865 it was renamed Fort Worth after Confederate General Robert E Lee's Headquarters during the American Civil War (1861-1865). When Fort Worth was destroyed by Union forces early in 1865 they burned most of it except for some stores which were rebuilt soon afterwards under new management as the First National Bank Building still stands today on Commerce Street across from Central Market Place. When Fort Worth became an open market town with no central business district it needed a new capital and so on January 8th 1870 Fort Worth city fathers selected Clayton as their choice over Austin due to its location within easy reach of both Dallas and Houston through railroads. A group led by J C Wyatt purchased all of downtown Fort Worth including what is now Central Market Place before setting up headquarters at 125 Elm Street where they continue to operate until 1978 when they sold their holdings to confidence companies creating what is now One America Financial Center (OAFC).

After World War II, however, Claytons fortunes began to decline as manufacturing jobs disappeared in other locales in the area. During this time there were occasional protests against high taxes levied by local officials – some of which ended with violence – but overall life remained relatively tranquil until well into the 21st century when social media caused increased citizen unrest over issues such as education funding and race relations among local white supremacists
