It is located on the eastern edge of Gaston County and on the southwestern border of Moore County. Clemmons lies in the Pee Dee River valley and is bordered by borders with Moore County to the east and Gaston County to the west. The first settlers in Clemmons were farmers who arrived in 1819 from Virginia. They named their community after Colonel Lemmon, an American Revolutionary War general. The name Clemmons stuck for many years until it was changed to its current form in 1907 when a post office was established at Clemmons. In 1799, General James Wilkinson built a mill here that still operates today as Wilkinson Mill #1.Wilkinson Mill #2 was built around 1800 and remains one of Gaston County's most prominent buildings today. In 1837, James Buchanan founded what is now known as Appalachian State University here inClemmons. Over time, several other colleges have also been founded here including UNC-Chapel Hill (1929), US Army Garrison Chapel Hill (1945), and East Tennessee College (1971). In 1867, a post office was established in Clemmon and remained in operation until 1904. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Easley attacked Union forces at Battle of Ashland Heights and killed 10 Yankees with his sword while flying an American flag over their position on horseback. This event is sometimes cited as clemmon's only victory during the war.
