Clemmons is a town in Robeson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,493 at the 2010 census. Clemmons is located on the banks of the Catawba River. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area. The first people to live in what is now Clemmons were Native Americans who hunted and gathered food near the riverbank. In 1745, Englishman Robert Hunter purchased land along the Catawba River from the Cherokees for $5 per acre. This gave settlers access to water and hunting grounds that they would not have had otherwise. For many years, Clemmons was known as "Hunter's Landing". In 1810, General James Moore established Fort Moore on an island in the Catawba River opposite modern day Clemmons. This fort served as a trading post and military base for several years before it was abandoned in 1812 due to Frances Nicolls' Raid on Fort Moore which destroyed much of Moore's stock of munitions and other supplies necessary for his army during the War of 1812. By 1800, there were over 100 residents living in Clemmons with a single store (the first store in Robeson County) and two blacksmiths providing goods for local farmers and traders. By 1830, there were over 200 residents living inClemmons with three stores (one brick), fourteen blacksmiths/forge hands, nine sawyers/ planers/repairers/construction workers, six printers/typesetters/editors etc., four physicians practicing medicine alone or by appointment only (Dr John Copley being one), three churches (Methodist Episcopal Church being built in 1830; First Presbyterian Church being built c 1840), twentyseven businesses (seventy-five percent cotton ginners; thirty-six percent groceries; twenty-eight percent hardware; thirteen percent printing presses etc.), sixteen schools educating children grades one through twelve (grades seven through eleven being taught by private teachers while grades twelve through thirteen are taught by public school teachers), five mills producing flour Dubuque type milling flour at seventy cents per pound; four gristsmills producing hay(flour at sixty cents per pound); one limekiln; two ham hams taken from farms around town for their meat purposes All these activities helped contribute to increased wealth and prosperity within Clemmon during its early days but also led to social unrest because banditism became rampant among these same groups because they shared resourcesraints without fair compensation thereby dividing society into those that had more income and those that did not."
